to seal the holes or not to...

Anyone have faster jar growth with opened or sealed innoc holes? or is there any difference

Leave them open. Magash did a 90-jar experiment with 45 sealed and 45 open -- all 45 open finished before any of the sealed. These days, everyone with experience will recommend open.

i dunno what tek you are using, but just cover them with bandaids, or tyvek if you are using grain jars, and leave them uncovered if you are using BRF with dry verm filter layer. Either way, don't plug them completely, or you will lose all FAE.

Using PF tek with BRF/Verm in 1/2 pint jars. sealed holes during boiling procedure. going to remove tape for innoc and remain opened for colonization then, thanks guys.

ick. next time, just cover with tin foil held on with a band. I'd imagine you are going to have fun getting the tape off after it's been to 212 degrees. Either way, just leave the holes uncovered, if you have the dry verm layer.

tape was easy nuff, have some special tape its packing tape I think. stays together really well. yeah I have the dry Verm layers, thanks Ill leave them uncovered then, also I heard that if you start to see slowing down in the growth, turning them upside down to drop all the heavier CO2 will allow more oxygen to enter and then promote growth at normal speed again, any truth to this?

Eh, i've heard that same thing, but I haven't done enough PF jars to notice a difference. Theoretically it should work, but you'd have to wait for someone that has tested the theory to give you a definite response. Either way, I don't see how it could hurt, just don't shake your dry verm layer out through your holes!

It is not necessary to seal the holes. One should not touch the lid of the jars at all.

If one glues sticky tape or other silly stuff over the holes, one is forced to fumble around on the lid after the jars have been sterilized and that is not what we want. Isn't it?

I suggest to use a separate syringe for each jar. It has also the advantage , that one does not need to burn the needle red-hot after each inoculation.

^^ You might want to delete that, as you aren't a sponsor ^^

Mephisto: the point of the tin foil is to keep condensation from getting to the dry vermiculite layer during sterilization.

Jackass has been polluting the boards with that all day today. I appreciate the videos, but RR's are better, comprehensive, and this isn't fucking myspace champ. Tone down the banner, especially at the TOP of every post.

So let me get this straight:

If following MM's video, poke 4 holes, cover with tape, sterilize. Then take tape off for inoculation and leave off for the 3-4 weeks?

If I'm not mistaken, if following RR's video, there's no foil being used.

Foil lids during PCing do not use tape thats the updated improved revision of the PFTek in my book.

Ok...so according to RR's video he says to turn the lids upside down and put medical tape over the holes, cover with foil, and cook. got it.

Yep works flawlessly! Microtape that is nothing else.

I don't know why so many people on here are afraid of taping their jars before pc'ing.I've always used electrical tape to seal the holes before I pc the jars and it does the trick with surprisingly little mess and no foil is required.

When it comes time to inoculate the jars I just lift the tape up and shoot the spore water into the jar, then press the tape back down. After the jars are colonized a slight bit I take the tape off and put a thin layer of tissue paper over the holes. The tissue paper allows plenty of FAE and provides a bit of extra protection against contams.

I'm telling you electrical tape works damn good! It's very easy to take off come inoculation time and it seals the jars so well that a small whirling of air pressure appears in the jars when lifting it off.
