Woodloving: PF cakes vs Shavings

OK i'm trying to get some woodloving myc growing using some form of substrate, i'll worry about transferring to chips and an outdoor bed later. I'm using subs which grow like cyans/azures.
I PCd up half a dozen jars of PF cakes that are ready to be inoculated because in woodloving teks it says that woodloving myc can be grown in PF cakes. After some more research it seems that people that have tried this in the past haven't had much success and i get the impression that a sawdust mix of some kind would work better.
I'll give cardboard a go also, but i want to try a few different things, including spraying a LC and re-distributing some wild myc patches.
My question is, is it worth even bothering keeping the PF cakes and innoculating them or should i dump them and try a mix that includes shavings. I'm willing to do both at the same time, but not if PF cakes are absolutely useless.

I've grown at least ten species of wood decomposing mushrooms on brf. It makes a great spawn. Most will even fruit on it. You can inoculate the brf with your culture or spores, and when fully colonized, transfer to supplemented hardwood sawdust/chips for fruiting or spawning to outdoor beds.
A slight modification is to replace the vermiculite with an equal amount of hardwood sawdust, but otherwise keep the same brf recipe. Colonization will be a bit slower than with verm, but you can then use it either as spawn to bulk, or as a fruiting substrate as a way of testing strain isolates. RR
