Question regarding campfires

Is it dangerous to use a Nitrogen fire extinguisher to put out a campfire and start another fire in the spot days later? I would think that that would burn the Nitrogen and create some kinda toxic gas...

Well I did come across one Google result that said burnt Nitrogen creates a very toxic gas :shrug:

Rapid release of nitrogen gas into an enclosed space can displace oxygen, and therefore represents an asphyxiation hazard. This may happen with few warning symptoms, since the human carotid body is a relatively slow and poor low-oxygen (hypoxia) sensing system. An example occurred shortly before the launch of the first Space Shuttle mission in 1981, when two technicians lost consciousness and died after they walked into a space located in the Shuttle's Mobile Launch Platform that was pressurized with pure nitrogen as a precaution against fire. The technicians would have been able to exit the room if they had experienced early symptoms from nitrogen-breathing.

Actually it does:

N2 + O2 --heat--> 2 N=O

There is a catch though: for this combustion to happen on a reasonable scale you need extreme temperatures not found in common fires, but for instance in electric arcs or nuclear explosion. It also burns endothermically. (it draws heat)

If you see a small nuclear airburst, once the plasma ball cools you see a big cloud of dark brown to black "smoke". This is the nitrogen dioxide (brown/black) that forms from nitrogen monoxide (blue) that was produced by the nuke burning air.

Air itself is also a nuclear explosive, but that strays offtopic.

So yes, nitrogen does burn, both through chemical combustion as through fusion. It burns so poorly however that it's a very effective extinguisher of almost all fires. When the flame itself becomes dazzling white, nitrogen may add to the problem.

A nitrogen extinguisher is excellent for putting out your campfire, no prob there. It would be wiser to buy a cheap car extinguisher based on foam though.

nerd. I was under the assumption that his camp fire wasnt in a nuclear reactor.


halon is more readily available, compressed nitrogen can burn skin

Halon is quite unhealthy and environmentally unfriendly though. Halon is best used only in electrical fires.

Foam, powder or CO2 are the best choices for a campfire.

Foam is basically water with a supersoap and a propellant gas, such as CO2. These can be had very cheap in the size used in cars.

But why not put it out with water or sand?
