Any trick to getting mexicana, tampensis, azurenscens and atlantis LC's to work?

My bro tried making liquid cultures out of the above species, both with karo and dextrose + malt extract. So far he hasn't seen any growth, while his cube LC's are doing great. The spores work fine on agar, so is there any trick to getting these LC's to work?

He is going to try to make more and mix the solutions weaker, and make one out of honey, but the spores for these are pretty pricey, so he doesn't want to screw them up too much (except for the azurenscens, he has a huge print, which can make like 24 syringes... he can screw those up all day long)

I prefer doing sclerotia producing species on agar. They begin to form stones within a couple weeks of germination. You can then transfer the stones to new dishes, allow those to grow out, and inoculate grains. This ensures you have a good sclerotia producing strain. Once you do the above, simply do two or three g2g to get up to a truckload of mycelium within 30 days if you want it, and it's much faster than messing with silly lc's.

Your LC's are probably too rich in sugar which puts unnecessary hygroscopic pressure on the mycelium's cell walls which slows or inhibits growth. Try very dilute (1-2 grams per liter range) solutions of light malt and wait at least a week after transfer before expecting to see much. Room temperature should be fine and swirl daily to aerate. All of these species grow much slower than cubensis. Good luck!
