So who the fuck is this guy? I read somewhere here that immediately upon announcing that he was going to start running he shot to the top of the front-runner list.

What is he all about? I'll start doing some searching of my own, but I'm interested in knowing what everyone's take is.

He was in Die Hard and Law and Order. But yeah he's sort of a right-wing wacko.

Fred Thompson said:
Our government, under our Constitution, was established upon the principles of Federalism -- that the federal government would have limited enumerated powers and the rest would be left to the states. It not only prevented tyranny, it just made good sense. States become laboratories for democracy and experiment with different kinds of laws. One state might try one welfare reform approach, for example. Another state might try another approach. One would work and the other would not. The federal welfare reform law resulted from just this process."

"Federalism also allows for the diversity that exists among the country's people. Citizens of our various states have different views as to how traditional state responsibilities should be handled. This way, states compete with each other to attract people and businesses -- and that is a good thing."[38]

This is the only thing I've found regarding his positions so far, and I have to say, that if he truly ascribes to this, then

I'm personally a strong proponent of the notion that the federal government should be very limited and should leave most of the governing to the states. There are 50 of them, after all. As Americans, we should have opportunities regarding how we wish to be governed, and we should be able to have greater influence in our government. We are much more capable as citizenst to exercise influence on the state-level than the federal level. The local level most of all, and a state is going to be much more effective in responding to that than the federal government is.

In fact, acting upon this ideal as a government would effectively solve all of America's problems. The federal government would be more free and thus more capable of effectively handling foreign policy in an intelligent and reserved fashion, and start to play the trade game better too.

Can you elaborate upon this a little bit? I'm still doing my searching, but would love to know more about this perspective of him, as it certainly isn't ideal if its true.

His drug and civil rights voting record is antithetical to his view quoted above.

It sounds like he is a hypocrite.

Which is why I said Bush 2.0

I admit, I dont know alot about him, but I would say what I have read certainly doesnt match the information in his Wiki article. As you mentioned, he may be for smaller government...but at the same time he is all about controlling the personal lives of the citizens.

Maybe I am biased, but when the religious nuts through their support behind 1 candidate like Fred, I run...

I think he will be the next POTUS! He has strong communication skills, and strong support for States Rights.

The Religious right will not like him (but I predict they will hold their nose and vote for him.)

On Abortion: "Government should stay out of it... The ultimate decision must be made by the women... Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own." -- Fred Thompson, July 1994

Being a lawyer, he sees that abortion rights are not a federal issue and should be controlled at the state level. Roe v. Wade doesn't allow for state control, and this is why he sees it as "bad legislation". It handcuffs the states.

He's got a shot. So far he rides the "none of the above" tide. We'll see. And fireworks, a link to his voting record might be in order, since you cited it. Thanks in advance.

The quotes are nice...he has been a representative, does his voting record back up what he says? Politicians (especially ones with careers in actings) can and will say anything to get the vote depending on who they are talking too...what has he done to put his money where his mouth is?

Bush made a lot of promises before he took office as well. Many of those he broke. And not only good promises were broken either. So far he's done almost nothing but pay a little bit of lip service to pushing for a ban on gay marriage. So really the best thing you can say about Bush is that he lied about restricting people's rights. :P

As for FT, we'll just have to see. I personally don't expect much from politicians, they face whichever way the wind blows.

Bush took office in January of 2001 after an annoying series of pointless challenges and had to deal with a bunch of frat prank vandalism. 8 months later there was the worst attack on American soil in history. Somehow I think he may have had to refocus his priorities. Or do you think that particular bit of nastiness should have been ignored? Some people are just fucking......

So something that occurs in the context in the nature of your job description that is a big issue and stop all your other duties as promised? I fail to see your point.

You are not his lackey, (or are you?) i don't see the need to religiously defend everything he does.

I do not religiously defend everything he does, only the things I like. And only fucking retards do not change course in response to events. Let me say that again. RETARDS. Events cause priority shifts. Strategy shifts. And just what promises are being referred to? Who knows. He lived up to the most important one of all, he cut tax rates. Unfortunately he couldn't corral that parliament of whores into cutting spending too.

Nothing really occurred out of the ordinary during his presidency that should have prompted him to invade Iraq. certainly 9/11 is no justification for that invasion.

Fair enough i was referring to what unbeliever was saying in respects tto his promises, under the assumption that you were refrencing his data in respects to your position... i couldn't care less tbh in regards to a politicians promises as ultimately its mostly bullshit.

Events do cause priority shifts, i'll give you that... but in no ways does that change the nature of the job... it's not merely just dealing with that particular event it encompasses far more; and you of all people should know that. Their really is no legitimate excuse, if your not up to the challenge, don't take the job.

His voting record is mixed, But IMO he's the best the reps have.

"On federalism, there may be no better candidate. His Senate record is replete with examples of his being the lone opponent of legislation that he thought undercut federalist principles.
He took this position even on legislation that was otherwise supported by conservatives."

For Example:
"He opposes federal action to prohibit gay marriage on federalist grounds, although he supports state bans."

On the other hand, he supported McCain-Feingold...
