H. S. Thompson, 1937 - 2005
    #3813926 - 02/21/05 11:34 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

http://www-cgi.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/books/02/21/thompson.obit/

On Feburary 20th Hunter S. Thompson shot himself fataly in the head in his Colorado compound. What a shitty way to go out. Oh well, if it is truly what he wanted, to go out with a bang and get a passing nod from the nightly news, then so be it.

I think that years of alcohol, nicotine and other drugs that not even Erowid is aware of caused some sort of terminal illness. Thompson was a big Hemmingway fan, I'm sure that he did this as Hemmingway did and for the same reasons.

I'm sad it had to end this way. I can't say I'm too surprised though.

Yeah you're right I'll probably end up doing the same thing when I'm that old. Why not? My family and friends will understand.

what did you hate about his politics
"Thompson is relentlessly negative on Bush, but in a way which is at least entertaining. He just doesn't see much positive coming from the Bush family and the political elite they're associated with. Despite this he has some very clear non-partisan insights which almost anyone can agree with..." from

Really, are you sure? Any idea why Hemmingway killed himself? Look it up...the only thing their deaths had in common was that they both shot themselves in the head with a shotgun.

Your own words:

Quote:

did and for the same reasons.

A shotgun doesn't cover the reasons. Alot of people shoot themselves and it doesn't mean they had the same reasons for doing so as Hemingway or HST. I have no idea if HST was or wasn't an EH fan (their writng has little similarities IMO) but Hemingway killed himself because he was getting increasingly ill over a long period of time and when he went to treatment for depression they gave him a dozen shock therapy sessions or so which wiped out alot of his memory. A kiss of death to a creative writer like Hemingway.

HST was a private recluse. Also, he supposedly showed no symptoms of a depressed state by those that knew him. Hemingway showed a depressed state for most of his adult life and it was famously known.

...I just don't see the connection besides the 'ol 12 gauge.

Read the biography of Thompson. I have it downstairs, i'll post the title later. HeMMingway and Thompson don't share writing styles? HST had mood swings constantly.

Very debatable. Their aim in writng isn't similiar at all IMO. Hemingway tends to leave out more than he puts into his fiction and leaves the rest for the reader to figure out. Very Modernist. HST puts in more then is actually there. Descriptions that are sometimes completely out there and have little to do with the story he is describing. Its more frantic and random. Goes off on tangents. To me, thats nothing like Hemingway.

Stylistically I could concede that their prose is similiar in ways. Their concise prose with short sentance are similair. I'll give you that.

I love both these writers but I find they send me in opposite directions, thats all

I remember reading that when he ran for Sheriff of Aspen, he was running against this very straight laced cop who had a crew cut. So Thompson shaved his hair down to the scalp so he could refer to the cop as 'my long haired opponent.'

considering that Thompson killed himself with a .45 (which is less suprising since he writes about them all the time) i see no similarities other than suicide

Well... shooting... and the author thing... and they were both men who loved to get fucked up... oh and as authors, they both spoke to the common man...

I'm sure I could come up with more similarities, if I gave a rat's ass...
