Vegetarian and SATIETY
    #6999118 -

Ok, so I'm going to provide more evidence that I'm not a very good vegetarian. However we learn by asking questions

Meat takes a while to digest so you feel "full" and "satisfied" after a meal. You are no longer hungry. Whenever I eat anything, I am never satisfied. I could load my plate up with whatever and go at it all over again.

Any tips on feeling FULL?

Good question, I also have a hard time feeling full after a meal, so I tend to over-eat. Sometimes adding a ton of fat my food helps.

Add some health-promoting fat!   If you're having steamed veggies, mix in some olive oil and/or tahini.  Spread some almond butter on your toast.  Saute your tempeh or tofu in coconut oil.  Stir a little coconut milk into your cereal or tea.

If basing your meals around veggies leaves you hungry, add in more veggie protein.  Tempeh or tofu is excellent, and will take longer to digest.  Try veggie sausage or burgers (I think Boca burgers are yummy).

Realize that you will need to consume MORE food on a vegetarian diet, as nearly all plant-based foods are less calorically-dense than animal products and meat.  As I suggested already, add one or two more meals per day, and gradually get your stomach used to the increased bulk.

Though I'm not really vegetarian, I'm leaning more in that direction than before. I actually don't eat a lot "vegetables" as people normally associate them, for precisely the reasons you mention. But I have found that rice, beans, and potatoes are all rather filling. Try and learn some good recipes involving any of these foods.

I split my food into four groups: vegetable matter, carbohydrate, protein and fat. Even if you have eaten a lot, the lack of one of these can still make you hungry (in my experience).

Hey, I can quit eating Boca burgers any time I want...I just don't want to yet.

Actually, Morningstar Farms breakfast sausage is my "meat substitute" of choice lately.  :drooling:

I have the same problem; I could eat fruits and vegetables forever and never get full.
Tofu, rice, nuts, cereal, and granola are things I eat to keep me full.

Ok cool. I just bought some tempeh but I'm going to hold off on cooking it for a while. I'm a really terrible cook so I don't want to rush in without knowing what I'm doing.

I made some black beans the other day that made me want to eat meat. They were so bad my brain freaked out about being a vegetarian entirely. So I need to be careful there...

I just ate an egg salad sandwich with provologne and whole wheat bread with a small side of cottage cheese and that finally made me full. I'm going to beg my awesome neighbor to help me learn how to cook beans because she is ace at it.

Thanks again Shroomery!

Fred I think we are in similar situations. From this post as well as others around the board I have noticed similarities in our situations. I read your posts in HB's quitting pot thread and I was freaked out how parallel we are in many ways. This post is mostly directed to Fred so don't flame me for the long post! :P

I've been veg*n about 4 years now and I just recently realized that I had basically been starving myself. One of the reasons I went veg was because I was overweight and wanted to slim down. I think a part of that was wanting to reject that image of the fat lazy McDonalds American. I ended up slimming down (lost like 25 pounds) but I was still not happy with the way I looked. I got really skinny but I was still all loose and flabby and not TIGHT like I wanted to be. People would always tell me how skinny I was and how I needed to be eating more, but in my mind I thought I was eating plenty. When I would get cravings or binge eat I would beat myself up over it SO BAD and feel as though I was so weak and had no will power.

Then just a while ago I started tracking how much I was eating using NutritionData.com and I was surprised to find out that I was only eating ~1,000 calories a day. You really need to use that site to get a reality check about how much you are actually eating because I suspect you may be in the same boat I was.

I have now actually dropped from vegan (3 years) to a regular vegetarian for various reasons but I am trying to keep this post relatively short. Let's just say I felt it was the Middle Way.

I don't want to be skinny any more and I am trying to bulk up. One reason I dropped down to vegetarian was so I can eat egg whites (this is the only animal product I want to consume) but as I said that is only one reason I've dropped to vegetarian, and eating egg whites is not necessary, just convenient. They are like pure protein and good quality protein as well AFAIK. No cholesterol or fat or anything. You can get egg whites in a carton at the grocery store and just pour them right into a frying pan to make a big egg patty that you can just throw between some bread for a sandwich. This is a great protein source to help you bulk up and feel full.

Other really filling proteiny things that I eat (and that are convenient): Chili or Lentil Soup from a can, boca burgers, microwaveable tofu/veggie/rice bowls (omg I love Amy's!), walnuts or almonds in my cereal, pine nuts in my salads, egg sandwiches, stir fry with tofu, natural peanut butter and crackers, and that is all I can think of for now.

Anyway if you aren't satisfied after eating THEN YOU HAVEN'T EATEN ENOUGH! I don't know if you were like me (scared to eat too much and gain weight) but your body is telling you you need to eat more. It is amazing how low calorie it is to eat vegetarian and sometimes it seems like you are eating so much even though in reality its low cal. If just about everything you are eating is healthy, then don't worry about eating a lot! Get those beans, nuts, tofu, egg, etc. into your diet and this will help you feel full. NutritionData.com has a Fullness Factor rating for some of its foods (I'm not sure its that accurate but it may help you).

Well this was a long one and I really had to hold back a lot because I have so much to say about veggie and diet issues. Anyway I hope this helped someone! Fred feel free to talk to me more about whatever.
