Twice-fried unripe plantains.  They're starchy and crispy and chewy and delicious.

What do you mean "twice fried"

I had cooked plantain once, in Peru, and i recall it being good. I can buy them really cheap at the local asian market, so this sounds like a go. I just need some directions. What kind of oil do you use? Is it chopped, or whole?

Slice the green plantain into rounds then fry them in vegetable oil (I use canola) until they're soft.  Pull them out and use something sturdy and flat, like a drinking glass or cup, to press the rounds flatter then fry the flattened rounds until they're crispy on the edges and lightly browned.  Drain them on paper towels and season them with salt (we use the Adobo seasoning with garlic, pepper, salt, and some other flavours).  We eat them with hot sauce.  I like tostones as a side dish because my meatless tacos usually contain the beans and rice most folks eat on the side.

Is it healthy to pretty much eat only raw veggies? Becuase I dont have much time to cook, and Im low on the dough and I am trying to eat healthy and vegatarian...

I read somewhere that Steve Jobs' passing was partially due to the fact he ate so many raw fruits and veggies

I highly doubt that.  He had cancer, did't he?

I ate nothing but raw fruits and veggies for 4 years.  It was amazing at first, but then I ran into problems, deficiencies, etc.  I think a 100% raw diet is extremely helpful for healing and cleansing.  But being on that diet for the rest of your life is going to be hard to maintain healthfully, in my opinion.  You can keep it up for weeks/months/years.  But eventually your body may ask for something else.

It's all about finding the balance of what works for you and your body...

Now I eat a high raw gluten free and low fat vegetarian diet and am doing much better.  I eat loads of fruit, huge salads, a lot of potatoes, quinoa, rice, beans too.  I have days/weeks where I eat nothing but raw veggies and raw fruit, since I like to periodically cleanse.  I have weeks where I eat strictly vegan.  But do feel like I benefit from occasional animal products.

It's important to find the highest quality animal products if you are going to eat them.  When I do eat animal products, I only eat goat's milk products, never cow's milk (goats milk is way lower in lactose and fat, making it a lot easier to digest), and I source from the farm myself. I have actually met the goats my milk products come from and I usually only eat some raw goats cheese.  Pastured eggs from happy chickens are included occasionally.    I really don't need many animal products to thrive and am a believer in a vegan ideology, but haven't made it back to pure veganism yet, as my body does occasionally demand something other then plants.  I am a breastfeeding mother and find I need a wider range of nutrients then I did before pregnancy/breastfeeding.

Just find out what works for you, may take some experimenting.  Go n a raw diet for awhile and see how it works.  I can tell you that if you do decide to go on an extended raw diet to eat LOADS of fruit as fuel, you will feel fucking amazing.  I'm actually doing a fruit cleanse for a month right now.

That's cool, we are raising our son vegetarian.  What were your staple foods growing up?

People always tell me that raising my son vegetarian will handicap him from eating meat later on if he chooses too, but I doubt it will.  I have a friend who was raised veggie for her whole life and when she was 25 she decided to eat some buffalo meat.  She didn't get sick at all.

Have you never even wanted to try meat?

The people who i know that were raised veggie, traditionally stay veggie. I don't think i know anyone that changed later in life.

Wow.  That sounds like the ideal lifestyle to me.  I can't wait to live in an area where I can keep a goat and a few chickens or have access to them.

That's not WHY Steve Jobs got pancreatic cancer and he wasn't simply eating "raw foods". He was very erratic when it came to nutrition as in he'd only have carrot or apple juice for weeks on end...

Regardless, some nutrients need to be activated with heat, like lycopene in tomatoes to obtain their maximal benefit.

Don't agree with factory farms. Think it's disrespectful to the aminals.

I see...

I am going to try a raw food diet. I am thinking for breakfast and lunch where I dont have time to prepare, I could do raw. But for dinner I will have somethng cooked. At least till I am able to find more time :/

Also, I have been using exclusviely grass-fed butter recently. Rrealy brings out a fresher wholesome taste with the food

I think that the only reason you get sick is because  you lose the stomach enzymes that break down meat so you have to gradually introduce yourself to meat to gain the enzymes, I could be wrong but I feel like thats what I read a while ago. I have been vegetarian for a year and at about 9 months I got paid to eat a spoon of spam and I ended up with a bad stomach ache.
