File under paranoia: What do your foafs do with their trash?

This is an increasing problem for mine. He lives in a city, shares trash space with several people, and is getting a little paranoid about perhaps someone taking a long hard look at discarded WBS.

He is working on enough production to have a full trash bag of contam'd substrate/spawn, or other telltale trash, each day.

Just curious whether those of you who've done this a while have ideas. Sorry for the flood of questions/activity; my friend has been pretty busy and although we've lurked around here for quite some time, I just recently signed up to talk to you all.

Just throw it away in a separate bag. There's no law against growing mold and bacteria. An alternative is to drop it into the toilet, break it up, and flush.

Good call...I just worry that most of his contamination has some degree of mycelium that accompanies it. Also there is more worry about his neighbors becoming curious about large tubs and amounts of organic material that's leaving the apartment. The toilet is a *great* idea, one I should've thought of. Thanks!

Tell your foaf (lol) to buy a big birdcage and to get rid of his trash he can go and "empy" the old birdseed and crap from his beloved parrot's cage evey night without arousing suspicion, lol

lol Nib...foaf definitely went through the (precarious, I might add) step of adding a bird feeder to his not-first-floor apartment to increase the apparent legitimacy.

they tear...it's not the obvious stuff foaf is worried about, it's the occasional fuckup. Said foaf lives in a very police-heavy district of his city, and has LEOs next door, and 3 houses down on the other side.

At any rate, this particular foaf has sided with exactly that: garbage bags, disposal at night, by bike, in industrial dumpsters, with grow trash separated from that of bills and whatnot with foaf's name on them.

your foaf is probably safer thn he thinks. cops would probably not expect anyone to be stupid enough to grow in that area.

Also, you should visit the security forum.

What about the compost bin idea? once it is all rotted up it shouldn't be a problem, even though I can imagine this foaf wants to get rid of the stuff as fast as possible.

Ironically, your paranoia could be what gets you busted. Flushing it down the toilet could clog the building pipes, bringing the landlord into the picture. Or clog the street pipes, bringing city officials onto the scene. Disposal by night in dumpsters could bring in the police and criminal charges. There may even be cameras on these dumpsters.

Your regular household trash, as counterintuitive as it seems, may actually be the safest way for you to dispose of the waste material. If you still can't/won't do that, then see if you can find a public transfer station and just pay the fee to dump your bags there.

Or, if you have room in the apartment, consider vermiculture. It's indoor composting with red wriggler worms. Done correctly, it's odor-free.

Just flush it or use the garbage disposal. The material is fairly soft and light so there is little chance of clogging pipes. It's certainly not going to plug city mains. It might not hurt to have a plunger handy in case you do get a clog.

Definitely don't dump in dumpsters that aren't yours. It's illegal and a sure way to get busted if you do it long enough.

I think I will instruct my foaf to indeed, order some worms and start a compost pile in back. He assumes any bacteria or bad mold contams will take care of themselves, and has all the patience in the world to wait out the 6 months. This being mycology and all. Has the massive benefit of giving off tons of wonderful (and presumably mushie-favorable) compost!

Foaf's landlords have explicitly given leeway for him to conduct such projects, or he would not be pursuing them with such abandon.

Having a huge pile of contams in your backyard producing trillions of spores is a sure way to fail. Sure there are already a lot of spores in the air, but having a sporeload hundreds of times higher will cause you to fail. Those would also be proven contams that are hungry for your substrate.

The best thing to do is to dispose of the contams without ever letting them have a chance to contaminate your whole area. Some people sterilize contaminated substrate before throwing it out and some people even throw out contaminated substrate jars and all.

toilet sounds like the best idea, i live in a house so u usually just pour it on the ground somewhere or throw it in a fire but yea with a apartment u would have to flush it or pour it down the sink
