Silicone injection ports

Ive been sitting down making allot of silicone injection ports. I made 4 dozen last night. I just wanted to tell you guys what I think is the best way to make a long lasting good injection port on a quart jar lid. Take the lid and poke a hole in it with a normal size Phillips screwdriver. Then squirt a good pile of silicone on a paper plate. Use a Popsicle stick to pick up a good glob of silicone, and place it over the hole on the top side of the lid. Make sure it fills the hole and has good contact with the lid. Do the same thing on the underside. You want a good 1/4 inch of silicone to inject through. Use 100% clear silicone sealant. It will withstand the pressure cooker. I have some I made like this awhile back and they have survived 15+ pressure cookings and injections, and they are still good for another 15.

Silicone injection ports are best used if you flame your needle and let it cool, then wipe the injection port with a paper towel soaked in alcohol. I dont care if you inject your jars right next to a moldy loaf of bread you wont get contams from your inoculation.

Its really good if you dont have a flowhood or glove box. I love it because I hate working in the glove box, it takes too long.

This is a cheap and effective way to create self-healing injection ports in jar lids. The ports I've made with regular household silicone have outlived most of the lids themselves.

just to let you know...i use that RED RTV silicone...if you make your healing ports, and then stick them in the PC...they are already cured by the time your jars are done PC'in...must be the intense heat that cures them sooo fast...

Thats pretty cool, I like clear silicone though, it cures over night so its not that big of deal.

I know this is a necro bump, but...

Do you need to make any sort of ventilation on the lid too?  Or will the Silicon vent gas in the jar?

You can order tvek for free online from usps.com  Also the micropore tape you can find at a pharmacy..

You can always just you micropore tape too if you can't get your hands on tyvek.. But I don't think that will be a problem as it is free..

thats how i make my grain lids! :laugh: i think i learned it reading a post from agar- who had many lid ideas. i like how you only have to use a little square of tyvek as opposed to a huge peice to cover the whole opening of the jar.

Don't forget polyfill.

And I think it's a felony to order those envelopes with the intent to use them for anything but what they're for. I'm not 100% on this [I'm not even American] but I remember reading it in a couple other posts. Just be careful how many you order at once if anything.

Yeah it is a felony to deface government property so if you order them with the intent to cut them up it is a crime.. So just order some because you have priority mail to send out :wink:

Tyvek is surprisingly easy to find. Some shopping bags from department stores are made out of tyvek for instance! If it feels like paper but isn't quite like it, and isnt some type of cardboard, it is probably tyvek. Those red Netflix envelopes are tyvek i believe!

I don't really under stand the whole gas/air exchange is this while your jars are colonizing? It must not be much of a concern if your jars have a few holes in the lid and lid is covered if foil? and do I need to poke a hole in the silicone then i can inoculate or just go for it?
