Don't sterilize your casing. If you want extra security, you may place it damp and covered in an oven at 160°F for two hours, let it cool for several hours, and then apply. Other folks sterilize their casing and leave it outside for a few days uncovered. This is an alternate type of pasteurization.

I was wondering what the negitive effect of sterilization was on caseing?

It supposedly might weaken its resistance to contamination. It's like the known effect of cleaning your ears too much and getting an ear infection. Some things are best left closer to an equilibrium.
