verm/perlite mix

Would it be alright for me to mix vermiculite and perlite 50/50 for the bottom of my terrarium and put the cakes directly onto it? Or would I run into problems?

Between the vermiculite and perlite, I think that you would likely end up with a soggy mess. If you're looking for something to set your cakes on, though, check out those Geolite balls like they use in the hydra-pod. They're sold at hydroponic supply shopps and the like. I understand they're a little more expensive, but work better for setting cakes on than the perlite (and defintiely the vermiculite).

My local city officials experience is that vermiculite will work but you do have to watch your water content, also the cakes will gain moisture from the humidity as well.
