Perlite vs. Vermiculite

Ok, I plan on casing my shroom cakes, and some guides say to use vermiculite in your casing, and some say to use perlite. It seems like they both serve the same purpose (water retention), so I was wondering what's the difference between the two?

You want to use vermiculite. Perlite does not retain water, it is good at evaporating it and is used to humidify your terrarium.
