Unfortunately did not get pictures. I traveled in an inexperienced shrooming group (only I and one other had ever hunted before) through a cow pasture. We found several immature mushrooms I thought strongly to be cubensis. I instructed my friends not to take them, however, until we had a positive id..They boiled the shrooms anyway and dosed. Since the caps were few in number and immature, everybody reported a mid body buzz and there was noticible pupil dilation.

So, I'm wondering if these were cubensis or some other species. The largest cap we found was over an inch and a half in diameter, the smallest about half an inch.

The caps were white, slightly browning at the center, coated with a film. The gills were very narrowly spaced, ranging from barely lavender to very dark purple. Stalk was white and narrow. None of the shrooms had a veil as far as I can remember- can this be due to immaturity? They bruised blue. I did not take a spore print.

We also found several mushrooms of a very similar variety, having silver gills that shone a bit in the light. Some of these seemed covered with silvery crystals all over. Another variety were very dark blue with pitch black gills. Needless to say nobody ate those because I had no idea what the hell they were.

They sound like a Copelandia cyanescens...

You were pretty balzy just to eat them! Look up some pics of a Copelandia cyanescens, and see if they look similar.

I didn't eat them, my three friends did. I notified them ahead of time that 911 WOULD be called if any suspicious symptoms developed..

After looking at a few pictures of c. cyanescens, i find it much more similar to what we found. However, isn't c. cyanescens native to the pacific ring? What would be the likelihood of finding it in a small south carolina town?

Does this species also exhibit the silvering effect?

The guide on shroomery states that c. cyanescens has "brown to dark" gills, but most every shroom we picked had silverish or purplish gills...Very interesting.

You'll definetly going to fine more cyans in the south rather in the pnw. Psilocybe Cyans are found in the PNW...you might have the two confused.
