so like i went hunting in my backyard and to my surprise.....

came from this patch...

that patch was spawned with spent rye berry casings and colonized pattys from our field...the babies were actually coming up underneath a whole patty that was just laying there thats why they look squashed......there are some more pins so will have more pix later...

hey guys not to butt in......but was wondering if you guys might help me learn what to look for and not to look for up here in NC..I am somewhere around raleigh area....won't say where exactly. But I live right next to cow feilds and was wondering if what I am finding is edible....hallucinagenic, wanting to study them but never done this before...been years since I even did shrooms and don't want to be stupid and or die...I just know they are abundant where I am for the most part!!! I know there were diff looking ones, some i picked smelled like the ones i ate and looked like the ones i ate years ago....but i would never just eat them now without knowing or without help... Any help would be great........ hoping not to sound like an ass here. thank you pj

OK question... I had read a post and thread from ST about a mushroom she found. great pics she had. The reason I am posting this is because she mentioned "they smell like magic" what does that mean. I know way back when i ate shrooms for psychadelic purposes of tripping in 94-96 the shrooms I purchased and ate smelled a lot like the ones I picked the other day in the cow dung field. Not all of the shrooms I picked the other day smelled like this mind you. but a few of them did. They had a smell that took me right back to those magic days but the days of wanting to gag from remembering eating them. lol. anyway ......I am going to go pick some later today since alberto has come and gone with lots of rain and I will take pics of them fresh on the dung, picked, and many others then post them to see what you all think..in hopes that they might be active psychadelic species. And not dangerouse ones. My eyes hurt from researching all day and night the last 4 days online thank you all pj

OK GUYS....I went on a hike today and I found a LOT of shroomies hangin out on cow dung, a few look diff than others, am waiting on spore samples now, and I found a few in the grass near cow dung as well as some by a stream in the same cow field. I took pics of all of them some in their habitat...some in my hand or friends hand, some on white reinforced paper towels industrial kind face down and that is on top of a cookie sheet and now putting them up in secure location for now till you guys can HOPEFULLY HELP ME identify them properly. I had such an awesome time out looking and taking pics, I felt like I was doing something productive lol. anyway I will upload the pics and hope someone can help me figure out how to get them on one of these posts I make for later. thank you happy hunting....... pj

But the pics were taken? Probably just saved to internal memory. Usually, you can just copy them over to the memory card.

ok lets see what I can do with these pics seeing I am not a very good picture taker!!! I apologize greatly for the fuzziness of the pics, and I will have to take more of them today. I will do my best to describe where i located them and what their differances are and were to me from others if any that i found near them or looked like them. I am not very good at understanding the spores and convex..ect type talk, but will try my best to describe them in any event. pj
here is a few pics of the first ones i collected. they were a gray to brownish color. the stems were skinny, and they resembled the liberty caps a little to me. I know they are not them. I also know there are many other kinds, so that is why I am asking. I did see pics last night of ones that resembled these a lot more, but forget the name. My kids were screaming for me so I had to close out. However these little guys were growing on the cow dung in the field, or right next to it in some cases. they were hard to get to lay down, so I pulled the caps off a few and will take pics of their spore prints later for you and post those.

thank you random. I thought the same bout the caps being inky ones....although they did not leak anything. however I do have more mushrooms to show...just waiting for a friend to get here to help me upload more pics since i don't know what i am doing. hoping for more help in identification when i post those pics and info. pj Not feeling so well today.......I keep reading it is NOT possible to get sick from touching and handling shroomies. I guess it must be a bug I am getting...just strange I guess. will post those pics shortly of the other shrooms and maybe some spore prints

ok guys ....here are some more pics taken today. hopefully this will help. if you have any questions just ask me I will tell you what I can or what I know about location and stuff on where I got them. Although again, these all came from the cow dung or next to in grass areas of a field. With exception of one which i will point out is meater looking, and is reddish pink in the center of the stem was strange....you will see it and know which one i am talking about. that one was picked by the stream and was only one there. i got the root up and all though as I was told to try to do carefully to help identify. hope you enjoy the pics. pj
notice that one had blue staining on the cap...now this one has a little red on it ...I don't know why. the stem on these turned blue bruising from touching... as did these.. but not as much as this little guy now this is the one I told you was meater and had reddish pink center to it. he was the one by the stream. I thought I would pinch the stem and it kind of felt mushy inside. and one last pic of the little guys I found all over the dung and in the grass next to them. no ink though...are they suppose to be inky if they are inky caps??? I hope you enjoy the pics...I don't know if I found anything good or not. would love to know. pj

Nice........seeing these pics espec considering you are only a few hours from me is helpful. So I am guessing looking at your littler ones that resemble my littler ones above that I indeed found cubes as well???!!! I wante to know if they are indeed, then should I want to pick them smaller like that or opened up..does it matter, is the potency differ from the size baby-maturity??? I have acres and acres of cow dung which is why I am asking. pj

yeah we exist.....lots of us actually. I even host parties every few months. anyway .......went out huntin with the boyfriend and we got nothing. maybe a half ounce dry maybe a little more by a hair. Took pics, has not rained in over a week except for yesterday. cow dung dry as fuck, excuse the language. I am in I don't care mode due to smokage. anyway,......yeah this is what we got will download the pics now if i can and give spore prints later.
Habitat:cow dung gills:brown stems:bluing with tints of some green. Cap:some with golden center, one with nipple on top, but same stem and bluing on stem. Bruising: positive for bruising on all stems and including some caps.

what do we think guys...any good??? came from same pasture as last ones i posted...just a little drier than last time. this was all i found but all on cow dung none the less. as soon as spore prints are done I will post those. pj

LOTS AND LOTS OF RAIN SO FAR THE LAST FEW DAYS...WENT OUT TODAY EVEN THOUGH BOYFRIEND LEFT TODAY FOR SC...LOL HE IS GONNA LOOK FOR FIELDS THERE WHILE HE IS GONE THERE FOR TWO MONTHS OFF AND ON. IN MEANTIME MY FIRST TIME OUT ALONE WITHOUT HIM IN THE FIELD....AND LETS SEE ALMOST GOT BIT BY A BROWN RECLUSE..NOT COOL, SCARED SHIT OUT OF ME. THEN I FOUND A MERE 3 SHROOMS I WILL PHOTO THEM LATER AND POST EM TONIGHT OR IN MORNING....TOOK CAP OFF BIG ONE AND GETTING SPORE PRINT, BUT TWO SMALLER ONES ARE CLOSE CAPPED AND ORANGE STILL BUT WITH BLUING AROUND RING AND ON THE STEMS...AGAIN WILL PIC THEM AND POST THEM. ALL GROWING IN COW DUNG EXCEPT BIGGEST WAS IN '[OLD COW DUNG CLOESER TO THE WOODS...VERY PRETTY THOUGH WITH BEAUTIFUL GOLDEN CENTER. THEN THE COWS AND BULL WERE GETTING CLOSER...I STAYED TO THE TREE LINE AND GOT THE HELL OUT OF THERE JUST INCASE...I DON'T NEED OR WANT TO BE STUPID ABOUT ANY OF THIS SHIT. THEM SUCKERS ARE FAST FOR BEING FAT. ....GOOD THING I REMEMBER HOW TO LOW CRAWL FROM THE MILITARY "PHEW" NOT THAT IT WILL HELP BUT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THEM TO COME TO THE BACK OF THE PASTURES...CLOSER TO HOME AND BETTER FOR KEEPING OUT OF SITE. NOW JUST GOTTA WAIT A FEW DAYS AND HOPE THEY MOVE AGAIN ......THEN I WILL HAVE A GOLD MINE I AM THINKING WITH ALL THIS RAIN. PJ

well guys.........that big beauty up there I showed you a pic of. We boiled it down last night....just one, with the stem, and a few other stems and made tea for me and jason the boyfriend. Hubby laughed watching us have a good time on the trampolene and whatnot. We did not "trip balls" but we were not looking to. We wanted to start light after me not doing it for years and jason has never done it at all. it was a very nice mild trip that lasted from 2130-0200 this morning. I wanted to say thank you soo much for teaching me and helping me on this site and helping me help myself to identify and not be stupid. I can not wait till the next time ........not in any rush though. I am going out tonight however to look for some more. wish me luck and thank you Yessup, random and everyone again for your help and whatnot. pj

Hey yessup....... here are some pics from today. I am pretty sure they are again all active cubes. some are more brown then the off whitish with gold center...I am guessing due to aging and drying of the sun>??? I did find one that was a real orangish gold color...beautiful color infact....but no bruising to stem or cap. I took a pic althouhg it sucks...my cam sucks since my 3 year old got a hold of it. anyway we would do some more tea tonight but instead going to smoke a bowl take my perc for my headache since i spent the night in the hospital the other night for migraines and that is what they gave me.....and just relax tonight. I am not wanting to trip every night anyway. Question though........ Random speaks of hunting at 0300 am . Is this safe to do if there are cows????....I am asking becuse it would be great for me to do so, but I am not wanting to get stomped by a bull or cow at all!!!. Is it dangerouse to do it at night or easier??? And what should I do aobut potential cows seeing as I know they are near my end at the time being. I did not have a good find today. Just a few here are the pics but again they suck. so should i make more tea with these ??? lol mwah .....thank you guys love ya mean it....bye this one was the bright orange one i spoke of. beautiful in color but still no bruising. was found growing near dung but not in it...more in the tree line. this one i know is a cube... this one i believe to be a baby cube....not quite the orangish gold color cap is closed more a tan color but bruising is there on cap and stem here is a pic of the ones we collected today......not many and mostly dried out ones or ones that are getting to that point. no fresh healthy ones today and this last one was sooo cool. there were a few of them together on the bottom of a pine tree in the pine straw growing against the tree. they are hard as a rock...bright reddish orange in color and there caps are like that of a baseball hat..a brim. The under part of the cap or brim...had a wierd smudge feeling with no gills. was flat white. wondering what you think the orange one i found was and as these ones too. I am doing spore prints on the orange one i found and the reg cubes incase ........but can not do one on this strange one i found by the tree. hope to hear your thoughts. pj

Very nice finds. That orange one isn't a cube, not sure what it is from that pic - but based on your description it is probably a bolete. Was it spongy on the bottom, with little holes rather than gills?

hey there xmush.... the orange one is ...has a leathery feel to it. is a little crackled thinking from the sun been dry last few days. It has a little nipple in middle, the outer edged and a more yelllowish gold tint to them. there is indeed gills under the cap, not a spongy type. The gils are a cream color, a little darker perhaps. the stem did not bruise blue or bluish green at all, it bruised a brown color a little in the middle almost. it also looked like it had a veil, which too was a yellow orange color..,more yello though. I hope this helps. And what about the other ones ???? They were strange looking and hard as hell...but beautiful . I hope these cubes are all good though as well. If so I will be drinking more tea tomorrow night or for the 4th lol. hang on if you can...boyfriend is downloading a pic of the orange one again...we will see if it comes out better. if so i will upload it in a sec . pj

Most of them are quite cubish looking, but it is a bit hard to tell from the pics - three year olds are hell on electronics.
To be safe I'd wait for a real cube expert like yessup. In the meantime you can print any that you aren't sure of, and obviously check for bluing. Make sure you don't throw anything into the tea that you're not 100% sure of. I'm eager to see the nice pic of the orange one. It was growing on dung you say?

Did the "baseball cap" looking one look like this: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/ganoderma_tsugae.html ?
The one in the second photo is not a cube, as you probably know. It looks a bit like russula, but it's hard to tell by that pic. Pic #4 appears to be a young cube, as it looks like bluing just below the unbroken veil.
Just continue to be methodical, don't ingest anything that doesn't have gills, purple spore deposit and bruise blue all in combination.

Cows: IME, all herds are different. Where some will follow me around and graze, others don't mind my presence as long as I give them distance, others are downright agressive. I've had a group of about 15 cows chase me while 4 more tried to head me off to the fence as I ran like a scared little bitch, while the only bull in the field (friggin huge I might add) just laid under a shade tree and watched (prolly laughed too)

When I'm around cows, it's always the ones that are 6-8 months old that are a problem. They're curious and a bit pushy and will follow you around and sometimes gang up on you. They're like angry teenagers. Night is a fine time to go though, cows sleep too so they won't be too active. Just be careful not to scare one.

pjshroombear, just so you know I had to remove your post, as I was getting complaints from other users and it didn't really have anything to do with mushroom hunting. The community section of the shroomery might be more appropriate. Thanks.

Yes, I didn't even notice it until I received PM complaints.
Since it didn't have anything to do with the thread subject or mushroom hunting at all for that matter and someone apparently was offended, it had to be removed.

Hey you guys, i live in South Carolina too. In Crappy old Sumter. We pretty much have no good fields and i cant find any besides like one or two, one barely produces and the other dont at all. Does anyone that has shroomed alot in SC have any advice for me?
Also, i went shrooming last night and the night before, and im new on this board. I searched the subject field for like 3 hours combined on both nights. and the first night i found one cubenisis, the second i found another. But on the first night i noticed pin heads poking through the cow patties and upon returning the second, realized there was alot more pinheads on those two patties. But what im really looking for is a field that actually produces, just for personal use mind you. God i havent ate shrooms in about two years and id really like to again.

How do you find fields around here. [Re: RandomHero]

It seems that all the fields are really secluded. Do you know of any that you could tell me of that produce but you would be willing to share? I have been going field to field around sumter for a long time now. And noone cares about shrooms around here so noone knows anything.

But, we tend to forget that if it wasn't for people sharing, we would have had a much rougher start.

It's been so dry the last few weeks. You should be in luck as a result of sun./mon. rain. The Agaricus campestris are starting to pop up in the yard.

Yeah, then I might be lucky if I'm out of the mental hospital by the year 2050.

Well, we've had a real slow start. Here it is mid july, I've seen no finds in our region. I haven't been to the fields, but the woods are starting to pick up. With all this afternoon activity over the last two weeks, we should see something soon.
BTW, I was back in a remote area of woods the other day when I hear cows way off in the distance. So I looked at it on google earth and see a field that branches off the farmers property, set way back in the woods. Maybe I can get a good spot here (if I have the ballz to navigate)
