Not to mention you missed the hunting season in South Carolina by three months.

yeh dude you're a bit too late
I'm in south carolina and I can hunt/pick all day long If I wanted to ..You just need to do some research on what your looking for ..

Btw the spring season wont come around until may of 2008 ..its a long wait I know but thats why you do some reading and gain some knowledge on how to grown your own mushrooms the very same species you can find growing in cow fields/pastures

Is there still a chance of finding some active ones?

I highly doubt it not during these cold months
The most common active you'll find in SC would be P. cubensis and they tend to love the spring/summer/fall
The winter time is just to cold for them..being that they are somewhat of a sub tropical species they wont thrive in cold weather but heres the thing ...say you find a cowfield during the spring that produces cubes you can pick from like may to novemeber then everything will dry up untill the next spring

If you have some time you can always check out me and my bros south carolina threads
you can find those using the search function
but heres a link SC hunts
^ click or simply goto this http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5709594#5709594

^If you'd like to see what SC has to offer ....from the 2006 season ...twas a great year

oh yeh where about in SC are you located I might can be nice enuff to give you some tips and pointers for your area I know this state pretty well ..traveling wise..
I'm always willing to help another SC hunter out

Good lucks

Please read the Mushroom Hunting Forum Rules before posting:

4. Do NOT ask about current finds in your area.
These posts have been flooding the forum at the start of seasons. If you're curious about if mushrooms are growing in your area, get out there and look! Mushrooms don't read the books. Sometimes they fruit outside of season. There is no set date for any season, only vast generalizations. Your best bet is that if it's close to the season for the mushroom you are looking for, you just might find some.
