my legs are going to fall off
    #6953934 -

back in the day, i used to run cross country. that was about 4 years ago. since then, i haven't run regularly whatsoever, maxing out at like 3 times a month, averaging about once every 3 months.

as of late, i've felt as though my ninja physique is starting to be obscured by a pesky layer of thickened skin, so it's time to start running again. i ran monday, a nice short one in the midday sun, couldn't have been more than 2.5 miles. a good starter run.

decided to go again tonight, so i started off running about the same length, but with a slower pace. towards the end, i wasn't even breathing hard, so why not push further? so i did. and then a little further, and then a little further, and then a little further. by the time i had gotten back i had run for over an hour and a half! this may not seem like much to some of you runners, but please bear in mind that i am greatly out of practice.

i pretty much ran until my feet were ready to give in. i think i need better shoes. i did go at a pretty slow pace, but i was really getting into it, and i never stopped for more than a second to wait for a car to pass before crossing a street.

i'm both proud, and feeling pretty stupid. it's awesome i could do it, and that i actually did do it. but it's very likely i overdid it given the fact that i haven't run in ages. hopefully my legs don't fall completely off.

Funny story. I sincerely doubt that your legs will fall off, but you'll still have an in shape torso to work with, if they do.

Must've been that runners-high. you running-abuser lol
well, you obviously didnt do the standard increase of 5-10% per week or whatever that rule is...and youre running on old shoes? damn boy.

you're not going to lose any weight sitting on your ass with an injury. discipline works both ways. don't overdo it.

all you can do now is ICE heat ICE heat ICE. hell, take an ice-bath, slam the ibuprophen, and sleep your ass off. get some new shoes. Id take a couple days off, too, just to be safe from shin-splints/stress fractures.

If all youre trying to do is lower your body-fat (not train for a race/fitness), then you only need to run for like 20 minutes. Your metabolism will be raised for hours after a short run like that. Just break a good sweat, build a base, strengthen your tendons/joints, and get your body used to the abuse.
you know this.

yeah i know.. but i really wanted to test myself. I mean, like i said, i totally recognize that what i did was retarded from a logical running standpoint, but it was fucking cool as hell when i made the intended loop and was like "i'm feeling pretty good, i think i'll keep going."

and it felt even better when i ran all the way to a designated highway, then turned back without ever stopping. but yeah, i don't think i'll be pulling another one of these any time soon. it was cool while it lasted. until i felt like my feet were going to fall off. then it sucked, but in a cool way.

but yeah, definitely gonna just do it to break a sweat and tone up and try not to go overboard again.

okay, so i wake up and my knees in particular are extremely sore. when i press on the joints from the outside, they almost feel as if they're bruised. so doctors.. diagnosis? treatment?

I will prescribe some bud for you. Recommended dosage ALOT... ha ha jk. But seriously, whenever I smoke and run I just keep going. I get very rythmic in my pace and can run for miles. I loves it.

it's very difficult to ice joints.

it's just your tendons and ligaments. itll heal, slowly. until then slam the ibuprophen like 6-8 a day and dont run. when they grow back they'll be stronger.
being sore is awesome cause you know youre gonna be stronger when you heal.

the ibuprofen is optional though, right? just to deal with the pain?

or does it actually help me to heal faster? because as of right now, it's just an annoyance, and i like to avoid taking pills when i don't really have to. however, if it'll help me heal, then that's a different story.

i understand not wanting to take medicine...like fever reducers are bad because fevers actually help your body kill germs...

BUT, in this case, inflammation is what causes the damage. slam the ibuprophen.

okay, so a little update. the ibuprofen worked like a charm. my knees feel fine, no pain whatsoever. my muscles are still sore, which is to be expected. however, there's a new pain that i didn't really pay attention to much at first, but now has my slightly worried.

walking throughout the day i'll feel slight twinges of pain coming from the tendon (or is it ligament?) below my big toe, and every now and then i'll feel a sharp, shooting pain that can cause a sharp inhalation through my teeth.

my fingers are pointing to the area that the pain comes from. I'm guessing this is just a sign that i need better shoes, but i thought i'd ask opinion of running shroomerites. colbadol, you've been particularly helpful, any insight on this matter?

i'm about to go for a short hilly run. we'll see if it acts up.

exercise rocks.  I like riding my bike.  When i tell people where i ride and how far, they are like   but it's nothing.  They just don't know cuz they don't do it.

But when i get home i'm all dazed and high feeling.

Hope your legs don't fall off.  I hated when i ran and got shin splints.
