NITROUS PARALYZED MY LEG!!... A Clearer Explanation!
#5285476 - 02/10/06 11:11 AM (17 years, 11 months ago) |
|
|
Back in late November, about 2 months after I started using N2O on a regular basis, I began to notice some lower back pain on the left side. I've had some history of disc problems (specifically L5-S1, the very bottom disc in the spine) and I've been treated with cortisone injections every 6 months for the past two years and I was due for another. So I made an appointment to get another facet block done. It was performed on December 16th and this time it didn't completely take the pain away as it usually does. I only got about 70% relief. To my dismay, they wouldn't repeat the injection before I had to leave for my new year's trip to California on the 30th of December. I went to Cali with some very minor lower back pain and while there, I did two acid trips and sucked up a total of about 90 or so whippets during them. I was there for 5 days and on the last day, I got out of bed and could barely walk. My left leg had lost 80% or more of motor control below the knee and I was in EXCRUCIATING pain (mainly in my outer thigh, knee and lower leg muscles). Thank God I was comfortable when sitting.
When I got back home I made an appointment to see my orthopedic spine surgeon. He had me get an MRI of my lower spine and the results were that I have still got just slightly bulging discs at L4-L5 and L5-S1 and no surgery can fix it. He told me it would fix itself in 4 weeks to 4 months, but I wasn't satisfied with that answer and begged him to do SOMETHING to help me get out of this pain and get my motor skills back. He scheduled a nerve block for January 25th. (A nerve block is the same as a facet block, except that they inject the cortisone and xylocaine directly into the nerve instead of next to it.) This is the most painful procedure I've ever experienced. It felt like I was stepping on the third rail of the subway with a ground wire taped to my lower back! It seemed to work great at first, but that's normal because the xylocaine numbs the nerve. But, after a day or so, the pain, numbness and motor control loss came back. I stopped using N2O 3 days later (January 28th) because I felt like shit from it. Explained In This Post
Then, yesterday, I read this article and FREAKED OUT! It seems obvious to me that the N2O abuse caused the escalation of the left lower back pain to paralysis of my left leg.
Quote:
Overuse of Nitrous
This 36-year old electrical engineer came to the emergency room complaining that he was unable to walk. Symptoms had begun 4 days earlier with "pins and neeedles" in both feet that gradually worsened and ascended to involve the knees and the fingertips. With worsening of the paresthesias (-no sense of touch or pain-) he noted difficulty in maintaining proper control of the movements of his arms and hands and trouble in walking. He also reported the sensation of electric shocks through his back and legs upon flexion of the neck. He denied bladder or bowel impairment but he had been unable to have an erection for the past week. His past medical history was unremarka- ble except for occasional abuse of alcohol in the past. However he denied any drinking of alcohol for the past 8 months.
For recreational purposes he had inhaled two to three boxes of nitrous oxide, each box containing 24 cartridges, practically every day for the past six months.
When first seen his general physical examination was completely unremarka- ble. The neurological examination showed hyperesthesia and hyperalgesia in the lower extremities up to the knees. He had severe bilateral sensory dystaxia and could only stand with support.
Intramuscular B12 injections were started and during the following days his hematological status inproved, (-apart from neurological symptoms, the functional B12 deficiency caused by N2O also produces megaloblastic anemia,- ed.) although his neurological condition continued to deteriora- te. The paresthesias ascended to the nipples and he developed fecal and urinary incontinence. (- stuff deleted-)
Four weeks later he began to improve and four months after the onset of the symptoms, and his last use of nitrous oxide he could walk with some hesitation and had completely regained bowel and bladder control and sexual function (-stuff deleted-).

Well, to be honest, I have no idea. I haven't told the surgeon about the nitrous abuse. I don't think I can. It seems to be improving ever so slightly each day, so I'll wait until my follow-up appointment with him on the 23rd and see what the progress is at that point.

Yeah, I know, doctor-patient confidentiality and all that, but I'm 46 years old and I'll lose a ton of credibility and respect from him, bigtime embarrasment. I'll have to see how much improvement there is over the next two weeks. That will guage how I proceed.

Fucking hell, man, you need to tell him. Your drug abuse was your choice, and you are in this situation as a DIRECT RESULT OF YOUR DRUG ABUSE. You must share this information with your medical caretaker.

I'll tell him about it if there isn't a MARKED (almost complete) improvement by my next appointment on the 23rd. He's away until then anyway. He took his family to Italy to watch the Olympics in person. This surgeon is the guy who fixed Larry Bird's knees and he does all the work on the Celtics and the Bruins. Rich-assed bastard.

Heh, you think you're being funny, but let me tell you something you don't know.
I already have no right foot. I chopped it off 19.5 years ago in a motorcycle accident.
So now, I have no way to hop on my left leg because it's paralyzed.
You still wanna make jokes?

You need to let go of your ego on this one, for just a bit. Tell the doctor EVERYTHING he can possibly know in order to help you in your situation. Who cares if your embarassed. Like everyone else said, this is your health, and unless you're harming others, the doctor can't say a thing.

Guys, at this point, I have no way of telling him shit because he's in Italy until after next week. SOOOOO... I'll wait until my follow-up appointment on the 23rd (no choice) and if I'm not at least 80% cured by then, I'll tell him all about the N2O abuse. I promise you.
If I am 80% of the way or more to being cured, he doesn't have to know shit.
Chances are that I won't be that far along in 13 days, so I'll probably be telling him about it.
OKAY???

No.
Not okay.
You can not be an accurate judge in this situation of whether or not you are "80 percent cured." That's just gonna be hearsay on your part.
No matter what, he needs to know why it started.
Otherwise, you are being foolish, and irresponsible.

I'm sorry, but I don't think he does know just how blatantly irresponsible and foolish it would be to not tell the doctor the cause of the symptoms. He has to get past his pride and his paranoia and tell the doctor. I'm not patronizing him...I'm trying to drill good advice into his brain.

I agree with Robot, Tripmeister. Although I'm sure that it's hard for you to tell your doctor the truth about why this all started, you're making his job a lot more difficult by not divulging WHY this all started in the first place. It's irresponsible not to tell him at your next appointment, and you may be endangering your health in the long run by not doing so. He may decide to alter your course of treatment if you supply him with this vital knowledge.
Regardless of how much you have improved by the 23rd, I think you need to realize that you are not a doctor, that's why he gets paid the big bucks to make medical decisions and you don't. Don't take something this serious in to your own hands because you're embarrassed to own up to it.
Good Luck

You are all right, all of you, except e-chode and goobler.
I'll tell him everything at my next appointment, IF I'M NOT 100% PAIN-FREE AND HAVE 100% MOTOR CONTROL RETURNED.
Is THAT agreeable?

I'm not trying to be argumentative or critical, I hope you know that. I just care about your well-being. Who knows, even if you feel 100% better and have 100% range of motion, could this relapse down the line? Is that a possiblity? If so, I would tell him on the 23rd regardless of how you're feeling. I would honestly say that if it's pretty bad right now, make a sooner appointment with a different doctor, since yours is away. Maybe there's something they can do in the meantime to speed up your recovery? In any case, I hope it works out and that you feel better soon.

TripMeister said: Back in late November, about 2 months after I started using N2O on a regular basis, I began to notice some lower back pain on the left side.

You make my day, everday

I actually spent 30 mins to write up a real informative and ellaborate post and tried to respond a few seconds after Blinky locked it...I'll leave my opinions out since this topic became a hornets nest after the last advice I gave.

Im not sure what your expecting us too say---this is a discussion board...if you dont want feedback then exactly what do you want us to tell you. Your not asking any questions in your post yet your quick to snap back at any small-talk pubbish replies or implications to ellaborate/discuss/contrast.
Nevertheless, If this was caused by NItrous...it's the first account IVe ever heard of with localized symptoms---for the sake of science, there's a first time for everything I guess.

Okay, let me elaborate. Mainly this post is to vent my frustration and share my fears with my online community of people I love, who hopefully love me. Though it seems true that overuse of nitrous to the extent that the 36 y.o. engineer did it can be quite harmful, it's rare that someone would do that much nitrous, but I also wanted to publish that fact so that it doesn't happen to anyone here.
As far as "this being caused by nitrous", this is a unique case where a damaged nerve was adversely effected by overuse of N2O which caused paralysis. I'm not saying that this exact thing can happen to anyone else here, but I just want you all to be aware that it happened to me and that it is possible.
I'm aware now that I'm slowly improving and I do expect that I'll be just fine in time, but I still can't be completely sure and I'm still scared/worried that I'll have permanent problems, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
I thank all of you for your advice and your warm well-wishes.
I'll keep you up to date on my progress from time to time.
I love you all, even the wise-guys.

Well hey, sometimes it takes shit like this to get us back on track I do wish you good luck, I do not however rest any mercy on your ignorant soul for swallowing down hundreds of whippits. I still find it hard to fathom that you continued your usage of nitrous even while these symptoms were prevelant.

I know it was a stupid thing to do, NOW, but I didn't realize that there was a correlation until I read the article. As long as I get completely better, I'll have little regret for the experience. It was quite amazingly orgasmic at times. AND... I've learned about the dangers so it will never happen again.

I'll give you that it is orgasmic
I personally hope the symptoms fade, at this point I don't think anything too serious of it. Perhaps just a month spent lazy as a rock, that doesn't sound too bad

It would probably help to know that doctors/dentists are around nitrous ALL the time and probably would be completely comfortable with you admitting your abuse to them, and probably happy to offer you advice/insight as well, as that IS their job to help you get better.
Hope everything turns out good for you man!

How much nitrous did you suck down in order to paralyze your leg? I've never heard of this happening to anybody before. You must have been sucking the shit down like it was oxygen.

Around 6 or 7 cases over a 4.5 month period in an ever increasing frequency/amount per day.
So... Around 3900 whippets give or take 500 or so.
Very addictive stuff, but really easy to quit under the circumstances.
