OH MY FUCKING G-O-D!!! Nitrous Paralyzed My Leg!!!
    #5282012 - 02/09/06 02:21 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Found here... Dangers of Nitrous Oxide

Quote:

Overuse of Nitrous

This 36-year old electrical engineer came to the emergency room complaining that he was unable to walk. Symptoms had begun 4 days earlier with "pins and neeedles" in both feet that gradually worsened and ascended to involve the knees and the fingertips. With worsening of the paresthesias (-no sense of touch or pain-) he noted difficulty in maintaining proper control of the movements of his arms and hands and trouble in walking. He also reported the sensation of electric shocks through his back and legs upon flexion of the neck. He denied bladder or bowel impairment but he had been unable to have an erection for the past week. His past medical history was unremarka- ble except for occasional abuse of alcohol in the past. However he denied any drinking of alcohol for the past 8 months.

For recreational purposes he had inhaled two to three boxes of nitrous oxide, each box containing 24 cartridges, practically every day for the past six months.

When first seen his general physical examination was completely unremarka- ble. The neurological examination showed hyperesthesia and hyperalgesia in the lower extremities up to the knees. He had severe bilateral sensory dystaxia and could only stand with support.

Intramuscular B12 injections were started and during the following days his hematological status inproved, (-apart from neurological symptoms, the functional B12 deficiency caused by N2O also produces megaloblastic anemia,- ed.) although his neurological condition continued to deteriora- te. The paresthesias ascended to the nipples and he developed fecal and urinary incontinence. (- stuff deleted-)

Four weeks later he began to improve and four months after the onset of the symptoms, and his last use of nitrous oxide he could walk with some hesitation and had completely regained bowel and bladder control and sexual function (-stuff deleted-).

The above story is NOT about ME, but when I read it I FREAKED out because I have the same symptoms, just not as wide-
spread because my misuse didn't go on as long as this guy's.

This is so depressing. I'm really scared that I may never get full use of my leg back.

Yes, but not until I got to California. I went months with none and I'm not sure it would make a difference in the neurological damage area anyway.

I hope that you fully recover, but this should be a serious reminder to Nitrous enthusiasts everywhere that extra B12 and Folic acid supplements are required to maintain health if you use Nitrous regularly.

Quote:

For the really health conscious among you (a contradiction in terms?) if you "must" do nitrous for a longer period be sure to take high doses of folic acid (is also depleted from your body as a result of functional B12 deficiency ) and vitamin B12. (No injury NOT guaranteed, but it might help)

Take breaks from things like Alcohol, Opiates, and Nitrous

Use sparingly.

That's not really recreational... I mean half a year of excessive daily use?

I'm not TOUCHING nitrous until I have full use of my leg back, and then it will be very light use ONLY WHILE TRIPPING.

As for alcohol and opiates, I'm only drinking beer (light use) and I have some perc's for the pain, which I don't think will harm me neurologically. I only got 20 of 'em and they're almost gone anyway. I'm eating B12 like candy too.

I didn't do anywhere near what the guy in the story did, I just have the same symptoms, just not as wide-spread,
probably for the very reason that I didn't do it as long as he did.

I had to read the whole thread to realize that it wasn't you.... and then I remembered this story from a few years back.

I hope you get better, take plenty of B complex vitamins and get those legs moving and some blood pumping.

Hope it gets better soon, consider visiting the doctor if it doesn't/

Its just another reminder of moderation and taking care of yourself. Before you try any substance you got to do your proper research about using it in a safe manner. This is a perfect example where recreation turned to abuse. Always keep in mind guys and gals, moderation, moderation, moderation. Its no longer fun when the good times turn into hospital visits.

That type of an experience could have very well changed your subconscious view of Nitrous Oxide and could lead to bad trips. Be careful and if there's a problem yell: "BOO"!

Im familair with this condition and I dont think it has anything to do with NItrous...It sounds more like a pinched nerve or something else that is causing an isolated case of Leg paresthesias...which can be anything from Celiac to buergers Tentany-- Sjogens--- T.myelitis---Hypothyroidism(sp) to GB syndrome...or probably just something minor.
Im not saying it's 100% not due to the nitrous but I would definately put my money on something else.
A loss of feeling in your legs/arms from nitrous in conditional with all your extremeties and usually starts with toes-fingers-tips of ears etc...
I worked as an HA for a faction that worked alot with cardioly/neurology...even though we didnt get any patients that had B12 defecienes, Ive done alot of research on this and numbness located to a single foot, leg or arm is quite a common condition and can be a number of things.

BTW, believe it or not, 90% of documented nitrous induced B12 defeciency is documnted with dentist/dentists assistants whom over the period of 10 years, 8 hours a day were exposed to non-intoxicicating amounts of ambeint N20 floating around in the room. There arent many thorough investigations but the Medical librarias I read also showed this longterm exposure only showed negative symtoms with thos whome had a vegetarian or more specifically a vegan diet.

Kernicterus... I believe that's how its spelled... B12 deficiencies can cause neurological problems. Fortunantly, many cases resolve once proper nutritional balence is restored. It's usually seen in people who are starving, or are severe alcoholics. I can attest to the fact that nerve damage takes a long time to fix... I had some damage done to the radial nerve in my right arm in a motorcycle wreck... took a couple years before the sensation came back to all of my fingers. Just be good to yourself. Eat right. DON'T DRINK. That causes more deficiencies as B12 is absorbed in you stomach, alcohol prevents that from occuring. Get well!

You are definitely at least partially correct. I already know for sure that I have buldging discs at L4-5 and L5-S1
that are impinging on nerves and I've had facet blocks done in December and a nerve block done 15 days ago.
But, I'm thouroughly convinced that the paralysis is caused by the nitrous. Were it not for the nitrous abuse, I'd just be in pain with some numbness.

You may look into spinal stenosis also.... I have it. If you've had back trauma, it's a possiblity. It's a gradually progressive condition that bone growth in the spine starts compacting and pinching nerves inside the spine. Causes weird stabbing pains in my legs and ass sometimes, occasionally I get a parasthesia in one of my legs, but it usually resolves within a day and after a NSAID (Lodine, Advil, etc) or 2.

........someday I'll find it.

By doctor's orders, I've been taking 800mg of Ibuprofen every 6 hours. It helps, but isn't a cure.

What do you get for pretending the danger's not real.
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes.
Now things are really what they seem.
No, this is no bad dream.

I've never heard of this happening before. I've known kids on tour who did nitrous every day for years and nothing like this has happened. I myself have never experienced this. It must has to do with using the whip cream chargers. Tanks are the only way to fly. Fuck whippits.

Nah, it's not the source of the gas.

I think it happened to me because I had a pinched nerve to begin with.

Start taking good vitamins and walking and working out and all that jazz and I bet it will go away. I have similar leg problems (not from nitrous) and going for nightly 2 miles walks has helped immensly.

Hey freezie...

Thanks for the advice, my friend, but I'm in such excrucaiting pain that that's not possible yet.

As soon as the pain dissipates, I fully intend to do a lot of physical therapy.

And as far as the vitamins go, yeah, I'm eating B12 like candy and B complex with C.

Why's that? IB is a great anti-inflamatory and I have inflamed nerves, so it makes perfect sense to me.

OMG!

That's terrible advice, goobs!

Inflamation creates heat. Adding more heat increases the inflamation. That's why the doc told me to ICE my back.

Honestly, you should never give medical advice unless you're SURE of what your talking about. You could cause
harm to someone.

wrong

heat first then cold

inflamation is a pooling of blood as well, the heat helps the circulation

may not work for you but does for me, as told by a doctor

Dont know why you havent dismissed this being caused by nitrous...YOur doctor should have "advised" you to come into the office if you told him your leg was numb and in pain. Doesnt really seem like you acknowledged any of my previous information about B12 defeciences not being localized to just one leg. Im trying to keep thourough documentation on all those whom has experienced negative effects from N20...Im scracting this one from the record for now.

If your leg begins to change color, then you really need to call 911.

Dude, please don't make me flame you for thinking you know better than a spine surgeon.

I have an inflamed NERVE. That has NOTHING to do with blood "pooling" (which is a blister, by the way) or circulation,
or blood AT ALL for that matter.

If a SPINE SURGEON says "Ice your lower back and avoid heat", who the hell are YOU to say he's WRONG?

Jesus fucking Christ!

Man, you guys really just don't get it!

I HAVE A PINCHED NERVE, CAUSED BY A BULGING DISC AT L5-S1 ON THE LEFT SIDE! THE NITROUS ABUSE CAUSED THE SITUATION TO
ESCALATE FROM PAIN TO PARALYSIS. THERE IS NO QUESTION IN MY MIND THAT THAT IS A FACT.
