So I noticed something(regarding darkness)...
    #6040364 -

I had to hide my crop because the repairman was coming over to fix the AC. Anyway, they were kept in the dark for 24 hours straight with limited fanning. Anyway, they came out about 300% as big as when they went in. Is exposing them to extended amounts of darkness good for them? I know most growth occurs during the darkness, and I've read that the 12/12 cycle works best.. What if you gave them 24 hours straight darkness once or twice a week. Has anyone experimented with this?

I might try going with a few minutes a day light cycle and see what the results are..

I don't know that 12/12 is truly the best... just most popular.

I've heard lots of people talk about how growth happens in the dark lately... but a bunch of people repeating what a bunch of other people said doesn't make it fact.  I've seen anecodal posts over time that people got faster and larger growth when kept in the dark more.  Only thing is I've yet to see a conclusive study or controlled experiment that actually proves it one way or another.  (Unless its documented somewhere I simply haven't come across yet?)  Somebody oughta step up and try... pretty easy experiment to run

I know there was a study many years ago on light that's cited in TMC showing that as little as 1 millisecond a day is enough to stimulate pins.  Of course pins can only come when everything else is in check, so giving light for several hours a day covers your bases, they're bound to get more than enough during a time when they're "ready" for it.  I think it has to do perhaps with a hormone or chemical that might be produced by a reaction that happens in the presence of light... and said hormone or chemical is what helps trigger pins.  (actually i remember something about cAMP being produced in the presence of light, though Im too lazy to go pull out my TMC and look it up.)  Perhaps it could be that when the network is undergoing said reaction its focusing less on actually pumping up the fruit bodies but instead producing whatever this mystery chemical might be... so I guess that could be a theoretical explanation for it.  We also know that fruitbodies twist and turn towards the light.  Maybe without it, they don't care about which direction they're going so much and just generically plump up in whatever direction they were heading... and funny thing is this doesn't happen to a noticable extent much in nature, wind actually plays a role in the direction they grow, probably because if a breeze is more often coming at it in a particular direction, it might dry out that side of the mushroom, allowing the side facing away from the breeze to grow more rapidly thus changing the direction its going... (just another crackpot theory of mine.  anybody with a fan in their FC that always blows from one side to the other ever notice slanted mushrooms?)

Anyway all I know for sure, is I use 6 on/18 off because it doesn't seem to hurt my pinsets and simply uses less electricity... and I also get rapidly growing biggun's but I'd more attribute that to deep healthy substrate and good growth parameters.  I'd still put my money that regulating light would have a very minimal subtle effect... though light isn't too hard to control so it could still be worth the effort

I'm sure we've all heard that a watched pot never boils.

When I first started growing mush I was almost certain that I noticed more growth when looking at them in the morning when the light had been off for the night cycle. Then I got to thinking, I probably would look at my shrooms a dozen times a day or so (Not just because I was obsessed but also to check temp and humidity.) and that during the night cycle was the only time I actually gave them some time to grow.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but the lighting conditions for my FC are pretty chaotic since it's in my office where I spend a lot of my time. The light is on all the time, so my FC barely gets any darkness. I started taking pictures every couple of hours from a fixed point just to compare growth, and all day while the FC was in light there was very minimal growth at all, but after about 3 hours of darkness pretty much every fruit growing in the tray doubled or more in size.

malawar i totally agree, once a pinset is set there is no need for more then an hour of light per day.

I am also very curious about this and have set up a little experiment.

I have a cake that is about to fruit (I hope) so I have set up a web cam on it and am recording a time lapse film. It is going to be 12/12 light/dark (fluorescent tubes), with one frame every 30 seconds. I plan to record it for about 4 days, more if necessary.

Here is a still of the setup as it is.

Not the most scientific experiment but an OK starting point I think.

The software I have is saving a sequence of jpegs.
I am still looking for a good way of putting these together as a video so if anyone has one please let me know.

Ive always noticed the most growth happen during the 12 hour dark period than the 12 hour light period. This is an interesting topic. I have always wondered about this and have experimentd n the past with leaving my FC's in dark for longer periods.
