An option for you to consider--

Take that coffee filter with the dried crystals (most of which do look good and clean, by the way), and pour some pure, heated solvent through it-- it will re-dissolve the spice, which will then largely pass through the filter, into a new collection container for re-CFC'ing, and much of the lye/junk that's there will soak into the filter and stay there.

well thank you all for the support. here are some more pics of the drying DMT - every half hour or so i use tussue paper on the sieve surface and on the underside of the filter paper, mix it up and spread it around again.



i'll dry it completely to powder before washing, will keep you all updated but this will probably be tomorrow. i expect (indeed hope) that this extract will kick me in the balls -



btw coastal, "re-CFC'ing" what does this mean?

That was 2-500g extractions.
Total 3.2g's of washed small crystals.
Not alot for the Kilo, but still, enough :crazy2:
At 20 doses per g,(50mg), my buddy is set for awhile.
Same tek, although slightly different approach.

the remaining naphtha was used to extract from the paper used thus far the wipe away waxy residues from utensils.

CFC= Cool Freeze Cycle--

The process of taking the solvent back to the the fridge from the freezer repeatedly (to make the crystals "soften" (not literal) and kind-of melt back into themselves as they "harden"

I've heard that some see purer, larger spice crystals from the initial formation to the semi-breakdown, and re-form process, if you have the patience to wait... it appears to allow the impurities to release back into the solvent instead of trapping them in to the initial crystal structure the first time it's frozen...

extraction complete. that was fun, and i also learned my first chemistry since i was at school 20 years ago.

science bit: what i did was
1) first to convert the 'alkaloids' to water-soluble 'salts' in weak acid (vinegar) - heating liquids makes salts dissolve into them easier.
2) the strong alkali (lye) then converted these alkaloid salts to their water-insoluble 'freebase' form.
3) these freebase alkaloids dissolve in hot 'non-polar' solvent (naphtha) which is then separated from the mixture, and the rest chucked out.
4) finally, removing the freebase alkaloids from this solvent involves either evaporating the liquid, or freezing the liquid so it can no longer hold anything dissolved in it.

erowid explains the chemistry in more scientific terms >here< :

"Most psychoactive drugs are considered "alkaloids", which merely means that somewhere in the molecule is an "amine" group (a nitrogen group with hydrogens and/or carbons attached to it with single bonds). Nitrogen 'likes' to make three bonds (in order to fill out its electron shell). It can also make an additional (fourth) bond, however this will leave the nitrogen positively charged (no longer full electron shell as it has to share some electrons in the bond). Typically, this extra bond is made by a hydrogen atom.

Molecules containing nitrogens are usually basic. This means, in solution, hydrogen ions (H+) will much prefer to bond to the nitrogen than to remain in solution. Acidic solutions (pH <7) have lots of hydrogen ions (H+) along with some balancing ion (Cl-, Br-, HCOO-, etc). Say you take an alkaloid, 5-MeO-DIPT for instance, and drop it into an acidic solution, say water with some hydrocloric acid (HCl), the extra hydrogens in the acidic solution will bind to the amine making it positively controlled. The chlorine ions (Cl- from the HCl) will then be attracted to the charge to balance it out. You will now have the "HCl salt" of 5-MeO-DIPT. If you were to take this salt, put it into a basic solution (water with something that likes hydrogens even more than 5-MeO-DIPT), the extra hydrogen would be removed by the stronger base leaving the 5-MeO-DIPT as a "freebase" (no extra hydrogens attached)".

Thus in a few days this became this

this was washed with ammonia and redissolved in fresh naphtha for recrystallisation (fridge-freezer-fridge-freezer-fridge-freezer-etc). when i filter this, the first collection of crystals should be the cleanest, whitest 'grade A' stuff.

the rest of the crystals (stuck in the jar corners) i discovered was the yellower 'grade B' stuff. this, along with the naphtha they were all sitting in, was then added to the naphtha collected from the second batch (just extracted) for further purification in a month or two (when the mother-in-law has gone).

i'll close with a few more of those rude vegetables:

post-script: the yellowish stuff melted in a warm room, was scraped together ('waxy' is a good description) and an attempt made at an ammonia wash, after which it looked about the same. so i resuspended it in fresh hot naphtha, and the magic puddle appeared and was removed. it's all now suspended in yellowish naphtha, waiting for the MIL to leave.

i read all sorts of clever techniques involving activated carbon and 'celite' to clarify and purify, but i don't wanna bugger it up at this late stage.
