Can someone tell me the difference between Perlite and Vermiculite? I tried finding Vermiculite at the local Walmart but they only had Perlite. Can I use Perlite instead of Verm?

You need verm. Perlite doesn't absorb water like verm.

Perlite is used to create humidity in the chamber. verm does not serve this purpose. If you need verm and can't find it, go online. All the suppliers sell it these days.

Try Frank's Nursery. They ALWAYS have it. Even out of season. You get a nice sized bag for like $5.

Vermiculite is a clay based absorbant, while Perlite is a silicate based absorbant (I think) like really big grains of sand. Clay (Vermiculite) HOLDS moisture while Perlite readily releases moisture. Vermiculite is used to grow the substrate of the mushroom's primortial structure known as mycelium because it holds moisture for the substrate to grow. Perlite is used on the floor of the terrarium to release moisture to maintain humidity.
Kitty litter and oil absorbant sold at auto parts stores, are both made from vermiculite.
I only know this because my lawyer told me so. BTW, I consulted my lawyer before making this post.

Here you go! All the facts, right from the source:
http://www.schundler.com/
I'm also looking for a cheap source to purchase small amounts. So far only Dr. Bluethumbs has small amounts at a reasonable price. If you want, I'll give you a link to where you can get a minimum amount of 8 cubic feet for $42 plus shipping.
