partition magic recovery

ok my hard drive stop working here is what its doing...

my computer recognizes the drive but i cannot access it
partition magic recognizes it but cannot repair it
symantic lets me browse it but cannot move the files to my c:/

how can i retrieve my data..

Did you change drive letters on anything lately?
Have you tried a system restore?

oh should have said its an external and i think its a mbr problem as my files are there it just windows cant find them.

Do get an error like "access denied" or "invalid drive"?

Shouldn't be a MBR problem since the computer is not booting from that
drive. It sounds like theres a drive path problem. Have you made any changes recently to anything drive related...partitions?

nope it was working fine one day and then all of a sudden it stoped...I might have stoped some files half way from transfering them...how can i retrieve my files is there a good program for this...

Have you tried running >CHKDSK drive: /F where drive is the target drive; from the command prompt?

yah i did that but windows cant recognize the drive....but anyways i figured out a way with partition magic to copy my files at place them in my c drive...its just gonna take me forever to copy/burn all these files as my notebook space is about full..
