Models of Consciousness (question for RGV)

I have read about a study which shows that meditation builds up the cortex through widening blood vessels and increasing branching and connections: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn8317

Do you venture that psychedelic usage does the same? I would think the effect is somewhat different since the mind is not necessarily practicing voluntary attention while under the influence.

body building is the result of excercise
so too with brain building. I agree with your assessment that psychedelic and meditation will produce different changes, to different degrees.

meditation is founded upon excercise of attention; and some of the results of meditation involve change of mental state; some of these changes of mental state are like the layered states of dreams and psychedelics.

that is not to suggest the reverse is true. i.e. just because one of the possible results of meditation is simmilar to lsd, does not mean that other results will be simmilar, especially since the result we are talking about (growth of attention supportive tissue) is not dependent upon the mental state change (which in mediation is not a necessary result if it is done right, it is more of a side effect)

if that was unclear, just note that there is lots of difference between
coasting on a bike to get someplace, and
walking the same distance unaided.
more exercise.

What this does seem to help clarify, more than anything is that the prefrontal area of the brain is involved in meta-meta-processing i.e. that associative processes there are related to patterns and motifs arising from processing already occurring within the brain.

this is a layer above frontal cortex processing which is more like sifting through memory (i.e. the association or matching of motifs among sensation and vision (etc.) occuring right now in the moment, with those of experiences of the past now fixed in memory).

the frontal mental process is very reflexive to and dependent upon how much and what kind of sensory input is coming in, and how strong the existing mental associations to that are: Frontal processing is very much like the experience of watching a movie and having feelings...

the prefrontal mental process has more of a helmsman kind of orientation/role, and the main feed to it is not corporal sensation and corporal sensation related memory and motifs, but activity of the frontal mental process itself). Memory and motif in the prefrontal area relates to the stream of consciousness which is a meta layer to the stream of life, or bodyness.

Prefrontal processing is very much like the experience of watching yourself watching a movie and seeing the relation of feelings before they reflexively take hold (I never watch movies like this unless they are horrible...)

this bit of cerebral tissue (the prefrontal cortex) could be tagged "spiritual", and arguably anything of value in spiritual quests occurs here, and it occurs here repeatedly and grows, if it is excercised, thus becoming motif related to self awareness and conduct management.

people who are on "spiritual" quests may do some work or excercise in this area on psychedelics, but not everyone is like this, I would expect less than 5% of psychonauts fall into this group.

However all people on psychedelic will have some enhanced activity in the prefrontal area along with other enhanced activity. Many report OOBE sequences and various kinds of detatched processing or radical moments of integration and ephiphany without any previous meditation work. Epiphanies will include prefrontal activity with frontal and sensory areas as well and are very peak-ish.

So a minority would probably have simmilar tissue growth due to their work under the influence of lsd etc. In fact you could see a psychedelic drug's action in this process as analogous to anabolic steroids.

But what happens to users of anabolic steroids and growth hormones when they have no excercise program? (they get hugely fat right?!)

Are you familiar with Leary's 8 system model of consciousness? If so, would you classify frontal and prefontal activity as subsets of system 5? Or do you think frontal and prefrontal activity do not correlate well with that model?

"V. THE NEUROSOMATIC CIRCUIT
When this fifth "body-brain" is activated, flat Euclidean figure-ground configurations explode multi-dimensionally. Gestalts shift, in McLuhan's terms, from linear VISUAL SPACE to all-encompassing SENSORY SPACE. A hedonic turn-on occurs, a rapturous amusement, a detachment from the previously compulsive mechanism of the first four circuits. I turned this circuit on with pot and Tantra.
This fifth brain began to appear about 4,000 years ago in the first leisure-class civilizations and has been increasing statistically in recent centuries (even before the Drug Revolution), a fact demonstrated by the hedonic art of India, China, Rome and other affluent societies. More recently, Ornstein and his school have demonstrated with electroencephalograms that this circuit represents the first jump from the linear left lobe of the brain to the analogical right lobe.

The opening and imprinting of this circuit has been the preoccupation of "technicians of the occult"--Tantric shamans and hatha yogis. While the fifth tunnel-reality can be achieved by sensory deprivation, social isolation, physiological stress or severe shock (ceremonial terror tactics, as practiced by such rascal-gurus as Don Juan Matus or Aleister Crowley), it has traditionally been reserved to the educated aristocracy of leisure societies who have solved the four terrestrial survival problems."

Does this paraphrase you correctly: The prefrontal area programs other programs (frontal activity), which normally determine how we feel and behave? Psychedelics enhance activity in both regions, allowing the prefontral to work harder to strengthen the frontal?

What sort of work are you referring to in conjunction with psychedelics, like visualization or meditation? When you compare the situation to getting fat from steroids, do you mean that the prefrontal activity loses its ability to do its programming?

I will aggree that the prefrontal cortex has all the character of eye of wisdom, prajna - etc. and that it is even located right behind the area considered to be third eye and it really does function as a higher seat of consciousness compared to the more automatic behavior matrix that the frontal cortex supports.

Otherwise, Leary is on his own attempting to correlate personal and anecdotal experience with ancient lore. for me his idea of circuits is dead wrong.

I also correlate personal and anecdotal experience with yoga but I use a very consistent model that follows known patterns of brain circuitry and known biophysical characteristics.

That it has any correspondence with ancient lore or with Leary is entirely co-incidental.

I prefer to think that it does not really make things clearer to bring Leary or the ancients into the conversation, but it is fun to do it anyway.

An excellent book on the subject of human consciousness )or intelligence, rather) is called On Intelligence, by Jeff Hawkins (he invented the palm computer, as well as the blackberry I think).

In it he argues that the brain is primarily a storage system, responsible for making invariant representations of sensory input. When you look at a face, for example, your brain recalls its invariant representation of a face and then compares it with the face as seen by your eyes.

This is the reason for, among other things, humans' propensity to stare or otherwise look at disfigured persons - when you see a normal face, your brain can match it to an invariant representation of "face" that it has stored...but when you see a disfigured face the representation isn't right so your attention is brought to the disfigured face.

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

something abstracted from the face, and from the rest of the scene is naturally created in such a way as to bind most of the excited neurons in a moment together into a gestalt totality.
when part of the pattern is stimulated later by sensation or memory activity, the rest of the pattern emerges.
that is the simplest way to look at associative memory.

it is opposite of invariants.
however, a tiny piece, like a sketch will bring back the whole memory, or several. a tiny part of the scene can also do it.

the dsfigured face analogy only suggest unfamiliarity which is often discomforting, but it does not prove invariants.

interlinked neurons that once fired in concert, can explain holographic storage of memories, and associative recall from simpler fragmentary suggestions.

proposing a vague inexplicable process of generating "invariants" is unnecessary, and for me it is inconsistent with biophysics.

Whether or not he correlates the "circuits" with lore, the 8-circuit model is still a model which attempts to categorize conscious states. You have to realize that the "circuits" are not neurological circuits, but categories of types of experiences. He used the term circuits because it was catchy and has admitted that "systems" better describes it.

If you are not greatly familiar with the categories, its silly for me to ask you to fit prefrontal and frontal processing in with the model. Thanks though.
