If it was really that easy to work for yourself and make loads of money, wouldn't everyone be doing it?

if I didn't go to school or worked, I am pretty sure I would be fat. So...I favor having a job for income.

Some of us need to get out of bed in the morning, go through our ritual: (for me) take my pill and vitamins with a glass of milk, turn on my stereo, walk to the porch for a smoke, take a shower, turn on Sportscenter while I get dressed, walk to the train while blasting music in my ear, pick up a large coffee at Dunkin Donuts at the station, ride 45 to downtown while reading the paper, walk into work with a confident smile and demeanor, ready to take on the day and take down anyone who wishes to get in my face with some bullshit....

That right there is why I will never be able to work from home. I need that to get the blood going. Even if the day comes that I can work for myself. I will make sure that is a part of my day!

I didn't click the link so I don't know what was being talked about, but this right here is faulty reasoning. An activity might be easy to implement but it doesn't mean that people have the necessary understanding/motivation to do so. Eating a nutritious, balanced diet is really that easy but you don't see it happening, now do you?

You have missed the point entirely. The point of this article wasn't to convince people to drop out of school, quit work, and stay home all day; the point was to challenge the conventional definitions of what work and success are.

I've been contemplating these things very much recently.  Within the next 2 months I'll be getting an entry level internship position in my field, and within 6 I'll begin my career.

I got into a fight with my dad because he was suggesting I find a steady little secure position somewhere, and show my employers how wonderful of a little worker I am so that I can maybe get a raise or promotion once or twice in my life like he did.  I don't quite have things figured out but I know I do not want things to be this way.  Working in a box surrounded by boxes, timeless water-cooler conversations, copying machine woes, kissing the masters ass, constantly biting my tongue, hoping, wishing, dreaming, dying inside..everything about it, Office Space and far, far beyond.

Fortunately my field makes many private opportunities available and I've got the skill to make things work, just need a viable idea to start.

I think the basic principle here is simply to do what you love no matter what the job entails or what the salary is. "Work" would therefore be defined as something you do for a living but do not love doing.

When people are unsure of the path they're on or what they want to do in life, I always present them with this scenario: assume every occupation on Earth pays the exact same and that no one will judge you for what you choose to pursue. Do you still want to do what you're doing, and if not, then what?

And NO, most of the people wouldn't think this is a good idea because they are so brainwashed and frightened.....

funny, i was just contemplating my future today and i realized that i just want to own some land with a few nice cabins or small houses on it, and rent them out, and sit around and collect the money. then i see this thread and now i'm even more for going down that path. thanks :smile:
