Two of my jars do smell funny.

Ok. I put the micropore tape on after getting it on. I noticed a foul smell.

I smelled and the two jars that seemed to be stalling kinda smell like sweaty old socks or something.

The other two don't have this smell and have more myc in them than the two that do stink. Should I just leave em be or can they contaminate the jars next to them with bacteria? Should I remove em?

ide seperate them, you can never be to careful. ive had a wierd smell from my incubation fridge lately.. i think its a mold or something inside of my fridge tho i just cant see it. i smelled all the jars individually and nothing appears to be contam'd but it may show later before i fruit some of them.

it's always good practice to move contaminated jars away from the others most likely it wouldn't affect the two healthy jars but it's always a good idea to be overly safe.

Ok I will put em in a seperate drawer then.

I did try one thing and that was to shake the jars.
I shook em real hard to break up some of the rice and actually managed to break it up so myc is touching all different areas throughout the jar. I am hoping these two jars will resume colonizing but am more hopefull for the two healthy ones at this point

Sounds like you have what I call banana funk. It's a bacterial infection that comes from nasties that usually live comfortably in your armpits, and if you accidentally manage to propagate them to a large enough extent they give off a sour banana-y smell. Your best bet is to chuck those cakes out outside, not giving bacterial endospores the chance to propagate around your house.

I also would avoid the practice of sticking my nose into contaminated jars, unless you know the contam to not be harmful. Just a thought tho.

Just get em out, there gunna be done for ne ways so like has been said already dont risk losing the other ones.

OK I'll keep em seperate and keep an eye on em for a couple days
And I never stuck my nose inside the jars I smelled it through the micropore tape and most bacteria is harmless to smell so im not very worried. I mean everything has bacteria on it almost if it were harmful we would all be dead.
I did manage to voilently shake one to the point that all the rice broke up and little bits of myc are everywhere in that jar now I am gonna see if the myc can overtake that bacteria like I read Roger Rabbit say in another post.

don't chuck them completely, just isolate them somewhere.

Will do.

I shook one til all the rice came apart. There was too much rice in the other one to shake much.
But now the one jar has broken rice and myc everywhere and there is a little rice sticking to the side of this jar. I am just hoping that the myc takes over these jars. As for the other two I am hoping they will colonize.
Does shaking substrate to break up the grains make the jars colonize faster?

It spreads it evenly around the jar so yeah i guess you can say it speeds it up a "little" bit. Its more along the lines just a tek to make the jars colonize evenly ya know? I wouldn't shake those again just let them do their thing
