Wet prints

I took two print from wild caps on tinfoil. I placed the caps on the tinfoil then covered it with 1/2 pint jars. A couple hours later i slowly lifted the jars and removed the caps, the print looked normal so I took away the jars again, folded up the prints and placed them in seperate ziplock bags. The next day i opened the first print to use but it had turned into a black liquid. I was pissed becasue that print was taken from a cap that didnt loose it veil yet (in the field) so i felt it had a good chance of being sterile. I decided to use my other print, which i felt may not be sterile. When opened, it to was moist, not wet like the first, but the spores were clumped together. I scraped the clumps into a PCed 1/2 pint jar and used a syringe to inject water then draw it back up. I had to do this with out the lid on, and several times, in order to break up the clumps. Everything was done is a completly sprayed down (with lysol) closet. I also ran an air filter/ionizer before before makeing the prints and syringe. All tools were also sterilized with lysol and/or 70% alcohol, the syringe was filled with boiling water and allowed to cool. I have two questions: Is there anything i can do to prevent moisture in the prints? and, In your opinion, was my process sterile enough? I just ordered a syringe today but i know that eventual i will have to make prints and i dont want a repeat of this disater

Yes, let them dry in front of a HEPA or in a tupperware fitted with a filter disc or a coffee filter.

...or you could just put the jar overtop of the print for an additional few hours in order to get that print nice and dry. They scrape off real easy when you do this too. Your process sounds good.

Anno,
What would you recommend printing on best? Foil, cardstock, clear plastic? I have made 2.5x2.5" squares out of clear plastic (from folder sleeves)...will that hold a print well?
Thanks.

You will find VERY diferent oppinions on this one. Some like foil, some paper, some glass slides. I tried the plastic in the past. Worked good. But I settled on index cards.

Best thing i have found is this wraping paper that is made out of foil and coated in plastic. easy to fold and store. plus the prints just fall right off with the slightest scrap. clean it with alcohol.
