Not going to college.
    #6898029 -

I'm considering not going to college. I got accepted into an IT course, but now I don't know if I even want to go to college. I only really need enough money to live and eat. Thoughts?

Read "Tune in, Turn on, Drop out".

That will help you make the decision.

Wouldn't have an e-book of it by any chance?

What's that book about (in a nut shell) left nut?  or a left nut shell?  .....    :bigblunt:

What's the message behind that book?

It's a Timothy Leary book that I have in paperback. Not sure if it is in ebook form, I don't have it that way.

He says basically that college doesn't really teach you anything, it is simply an instrument to control minds.

Me personally, and I am no expert, I think college teaches one to be a slave. 99.9% of people go to college in order to earn more $$. It is a superficial hoop people jump through to buy "ticky-tacky boxes and they all look just the same..."

I've owned businesses all my life and never graduated college (went about 2 years). I gave it up because the habit was more expensive than cocaine. I couldn't afford the tuition plus it seemed they always added a few hoops more to jump through every semester.

I have an idea that it's about how miserable and unwholesome the system is. I'm probably on par with the book's philosophy right now, hence me considering not going to college.

You're right. It's preperation, but it can be just as misleading as it is productive. Debt, unnecessary stress to burn one out. I'm telling you, there has to be alternative way.

I guess it comes down to personal choice. If you have the means, then do it because it does make things easier when looking for a job. Just use those years productively if you can. I think it's weird for 18 year olds to think it's necessary to do it at that age. Says who? Or Founding Fathers? I don't think that is the optimum time, it controls them and focuses them, but good parents should do that regardless. I wish I would have waited until my mid 20's to go. I would have learned more I think. Or at least been better focused onto what to concentrate on. I was undecided until my junior year.

But I don't even want money. I just need enough for food and housing really.

Go out and work a year or two.. do not get into debt and see what's out there and what you like. College isn't for everyone , some do just fine with out it. After a couple years of working in the 'real' world you should be able to make a much better choice if it's for you or not. Just because your graduating high school or what ever doesn't mean you have to plan the rest of your life right now.

The joys of Canada? It's probably a little different here in the States. I need money for more than food and housing. Life is a little more expensive, at least where I am. It puts a stress on you. An underlying feeling of it all falling apart and not knowing what the fuck you would do.

not going to college means you just have to grow up a lot faster.

truly, anything you could learn at college you could learn on your own. but how many people are truly disciplined that early in life? to get the initial motivation and the carry-through drive to learn is not an easy task for many people, as laziness is an active condition in almost every human.

sometimes it's nice to have a whip behind you, until you learn how to carry-on on your own.

that being said, I was just laid-off my place of work of 10 days under a year, yesterday, for lack of motivation in showing up. I was paid well, but had no real challenge or future in the work. I couldn't stand wasting my life anymore, and am now completely stoked with my plan to go back to college. I have a different major in mind this time, and one I think will keep me very happy in life, and always progressing.

I can't stand "knowing", I always feel happiest "learning" ... progressive, not complacent ...

but this does not work for everybody. see what works for you and stick with it ...

maybe college doesnt teach you anything, maybe it will, but if you want a good job its probably best to have a degree... as stupid as it is, that little piece of paper can help get a good job

it also depends on what you want to make a living as; if you want to join the circus or form a rock band, then fuck college, but if you want to be an engineer or chemist, then you should probably go.

and left nut...youre already taught to be a fuckin slave all the way up into high school... thats so the mindless drones of society can provide structure in this superficial world we live in. if you dont like being a slave to society (this is going out to everyone in general) then go build a log cabin in the woods and live off the land like thoreau did. if you dont want to do that then bow down to the almighty dollar.

College is like other things in life, put something into it, get something out of it..

Sucks is that it's illegal to just go live off the land down here, you need all sorts of permits and you have to pay taxes.

Not going to college may make it more difficult for you to find a solid job, and it you may make less money than if you had gone to college, but then again, there are quite a few individuals that didn't go to college at all as well as those who went for a while and then dropped out (Bill Gates, for example).

It all boils down to what you want to do with your life and how you want to live.

Take a year to decide. People do it. Remember, you're still at the age where you have time to decide what you want to do. Unless you've got things planned out on a strict schedule, I'd say get a job in the "real" world while maybe taking a few community college courses to get a taste of both worlds. Good luck!
