Losing my idealism
    #6886120 -

As I get older, I find myself getting more and more disillusioned with politics, and less motivated to try to make a difference. My once strong belief that I could change the world is fading away, replaced by cold cynicism and indifference. I see through their bullshit propaganda about how my vote makes a difference. The only way any change is going to happen is if there's a mass awakening, and I see too many people with their heads up their asses for that to happen. I really wish I could believe again. It felt so wonderful to think that my voice mattered.

It sounds like your ideals were faulty to begin with, misconceptions of the nature of reality. It sounds like you have been attempting to make a difference through means that are not actually conducive for your making a difference.

Divert your energy down avenues by which one can make a difference instead of becoming cynical and indifferent because you misconceived the nature of reality.

So very, very incorrect! Change happens every time you decide to deviate from the "norm," every time you defy the status quo, every time you reject the party line, every time you reach out a hand to someone instead of stepping on them.

Don't give up your idealism, just channel it into realism. Reality seems to be that we can make little changes, and that those changes are most powerful when they start with ourselves.

Your voice matters to me.

Your posts here are a source of encouragement for me and I am sure for many others.

Hold yourself to high standards, be a friend, a mentor, a lover to the whole world.  The waves break on shores that you cannot see yet.

Sometimes it seems
We'll touch that dream
But things come slow or not at all
And the ones on top, won't make it stop
So convinced that they might fall
Let's love ourselves then we can't fail
To make a better situation
Tomorrow our seeds will grow
All we need is dedication

Let me tell ya that,
Everything is everything
Everything is everything
After winter, must come spring
Everything is everything

Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
After winter, must come spring
Change, it comes eventually

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

find something you love, and engulf yourself in it. that would certainly change the world for the better.

I became disillusioned, too, about my ability to affect "the vote" when I was younger.  But I didn't quit voting because the way I saw it, and still do, is that if everyone thought like me, then maybe the bad guys would win because of our indifference.  So I pretend that my vote counts, and I have voted in every election in 30 years except for one.

The way I see it, my vote may not really count, but maybe I'm not meant to be here to change the world through my vote.  Maybe the reason I am here is to help the world in some smaller fashion, such as in the work that I do.

But I still can't help but vote...

There are those meant to be here to change the world through politics, and others are meant to change the world through medicine, and others are meant to change to world through religion, and so on.  But even for them, it's still one small brick at a time.

Silversoul,

I think you are concentrating so much what you haven't made for the better, that you are missing all that you have made for the better. I am nobody that you know personally, and most likely never will. Yet I recognize your posting name, and avatar. I associate them with "posts I should read and pay attention to closely". You have made a difference in my life. Maybe not impacted hundreds of thousands in the way you wished, but you've touched one.

It's like the story of the guy throwing starfish back into the ocean. There were thousands upon thousands of them on the shore, dying. Another guy walks up and says "Why are you doing that, it's not like you can make a difference. Thousands of these are going to die.". The guy throws another one back in the water and replies, "Made a difference to that one."

Presently I'm embroiled in cynicism myself. What is the correct relationship with a pious fraud? Is it a taboo to mention that one suspects there is fraud in things of pious nature such as charities and the Folding@home business? Feel free to hate me.

I suppose one could assume that swindling is natural; and i suspect the unwritten law is that it is OK as long as one doesn't get caught. Does this mean i should view relationships from the perspective of one swindler to another?

Speaking for myself, I can't deny ever being a knowledgeable accessory to, or party of a misrepresentation amounting to fraud by the letter of the law.

I when I was younger I think deep inside I believed the world was going to get better during my lifetime. Now, I don't believe that. I think it's going to get worse and worse until way after my death. But when I was younger I felt that I had a duty to try to change things that were really outside my realm of control. Now, I feel content to just be the best person I can be by treating people kindly and fairly, especially at work, having people's back and stuff like that. I should probably try to do a little more. I try to help out the world by giving to Médecins Sans Frontières http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/aboutus/ and groups like that. I have to admit though, I'm really drenched in cynicism. Almost to the point of being exhausted by humanness. Not humanity or humaneness I mean just sick of being a fucking person. When I see how bullshit people are I stop wanting to be one.

Idealism is lose when one loses contact with one's true self.
People tend to confuse altruism with duty and then we're not being able to discern our own thoughts and feelings from the other people's thoughts and moral sets.
Idealists are driven, amongst other things, by genuine altruism because they really believe in their cause, because they believe it matters and it is what makes them determined and flow with the change instead of fearing it. Idealism holds to things which come from inside, judgments which are not usually found in the outside reality. In order to keep with that and stay true to our beliefs we must access that ever changing set of concepts with which we interpret the world which is also constantly changing. That way we can adapt our thoughts to the outside reality but still hold on to our ideals... this happens only in the moment when we become self conscious... in that we're being able to articulate what we know.
To conclude, I wanna say that I think we must keep in mind that it is always out choice if we lose our motivation or not. The only will we can have or have total control upon is out own and if we know how to use it at it's high potential then we will be able to focus on our ideals.

I'm beginning to think the hypocricy of labeling and public humiliation of sex offenders but not of murderers and con-artists is a central theme of our reality.

it seems to be on a downward trend and doesnt show signs of changing directions anytime soon.

i think out biggest hope is the internet generation, the ones who seek out education for themselves. the bloggers, the readers, the writers. Not based on there formal education but simply their analytical nature. The Y generation may do some good, if we still have our souls by the time we can make a difference!

:what:
Reality is so vast that you can't really tell tell what's "central". What we see as being "central" is also a form of labeling. The dominant we see in the world is really our dominant, I came to learn that...
Change your main line that resides inside of your perception and you'll be able to see the multitude.
This doesn't imply, by any means ignoring any aspect... including the ones you mentioned.

You made a very good point here regarding the internet generation. Sadly not all the people take full advantage of this experience. Internet is a solid provider of diversified information and if we chose to access it we can definitely enlarge our horizons and views on the world. Also it gives us the opportunity to be able to make our actions and decisions with a bigger lucidity and determination.

LOL. To cover our tracks it may be best if the internet didn't exist.

God,

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.

Now go.
