I have a sweet idea.. I will selectively breed really big deadly dogs that are really good at killing and eating things and then make their brains like homing pigeons so they go out and eat other people and other people's dogs, then they come home to sleep and I harvest them from waaaay up in the tallest tower.

Society can fall apart without burning. Their would be mass exodus from larger cities and forceful appropriations of land for sustenance farming purposes, but not everything would go apeshit crazy. And sure, there might be famine and a fair bit of related deaths, and a slimming down of the general population. But it wouldn't be the end of the world, and it might just be the start of a better one. Or maybe not. Or maybe some jerk would get all despondent and launch a nuke and then the heavens would rain fire and leopards and that'd be that.
But my ideals would survive with me to the very end, as they are inobtrusive and reasonable. Indeed, my ideals are such that I wouldn't want to live any other way. I think that's part of what ideals ARE.
