Curiosity about Mexicana A and Tampanensis
    #6871249 -

Hello Guys,

I have a question and is this one,

I am interested in growing this specie I have check the different posts and I have observed that most of them were from long time ago.

I haven´t found anyone that would like to exchange a print or syringe from any of these ones, also it seems I have no access to the Marketplace due that I have to reach some number of post. I just don´t want to answer stupid things just to increase this number ...so...

And I have been looking at sites to order this spores and if I am not wrong Sporeworks have them but anyone else... so I have strated thinking that this Specie is not among the favourites of you maybe due to the fact that needs a long time to harvest, but also requires no dedication ... so I am a bit confused ...

Also some people say that the best substrate is Rye grass seed and not Rye , but others say that Rye is as good as Rye grass seed for sclerotia ( I think RR ) Please correct me if this is wrong.

I ´d like you to share your opinion.

Sunny Regards from Spain

I have access to the marketplace, and have things for trade.

I also have it in my signature.

I haven't had a single trade offer yet.

My advice: if you want it quick and it undoubtable quality;
then just order one from a sponsor (it looks like that is what I will be doing).

So it means you are more or less like me ... isn´t it ??

Why is it not popular ??

It is popular, but I don't know that many people grow out the sclerotia to mushrooms to take prints.

When they do...they probably keep the prints.

(they are technically worth more than cubensis prints)

The sclerotia producing species are my personal favorites.

It doesn't take a long time if you do it right. Rye grass seed is the most commonly used, but I think that's probably just because it's what stamets happened to use when he did it. I've gotten larger stones faster with weak coffee hydrated rye berries. It's also important to use gypsum in each jar or the soak water. The calcium and supfur both aid sclerotia development.

You can get a pretty good harvest 8 weeks after inoculation of spores into rye berries, and if you'll wait three months, a quart jar will produce about 1/2 quart or more of sclerotia.

The best bet is to drop your spores onto agar, and then select a good stone producing sector to transfer to grains. A good strain will begin producing sclerotia on agar within ten days.

Thanks for the answer,

I would probably get one syringe and go definetely for rye with coffee and gypsum, but the one I can get is used for construction , I will check if could be used.

I will keep 1 or 2 cc ´s from the syringe to drop into agar and for LC also to see the results.

Is it possible to harvest the sclerotia and case the rest of the susbstrate maybe with one or two littles stones in order to try to colonize again and maybe get a flush of shrooms to take some prints ??

Thanks again.

Forget LC.

You don't case sclerotia producing species in the traditional way to get a flush. You harvest the stones, then allow them to partially dry out before soaking overnight in water. Then, lay them out in a tray and cover with peat/verm or even potting soil. Mexciana fruits from the sclerotia.

Ahh, good thought...yeah, you have to have a pressure cooker for the grains.
I didn't think about that limiting anybody.

I've been using one for so long now that I must take it for granted.

I've never attempted to grow a sclerotia producing species on pf cakes, but I see no reason why it would not work. Somebody should give it a try. Perhaps another myth can be laid to rest.

I would think the PF cake would be a PITA to sort through.

However, whenever I get my hands on some spores I'll try it.

I case grass seed directly for fruits and I don't wait for sclerotia to form first. I just allow it to fully colonize and dump in a tray and immediately case with peat/chalk. I usually get pins about 10 days after casing at 78-80F. Sometimes large sclerotia form in the casing before pins, but not always.

I am not going to atemmpt it with BRF I just went always on rye and it´s been perfect following RR Tek.

I do not understand exctly why I shoundnt try a Lc pressuming that the syringe I am going to buy has some spores in it .? I thought I could use this LC to inoculate further jars so the same with a drop of spores into Agar.

Also I am not sure if they need GAE while colonizing ?? I suppose they do and it is done thought the punch hole that is used to be covered with polyfill but I plan to use Agar´s perfect lids to grow them and I imagine that they will be superb for that.

Any suggestion ??

Thanks

They are going to need GAE.

The bad side to LC is that you can't see if it's contaminated.Try it out on some ager before. So, you don't wast you time if is contaminated

I'm currently growing Mexicana-A on WBS in two 1 quart jars.
It seems to be a fairly fast colonizer. I inoculated 1 1/2 mo. ago and have gotten terrific myc. growth.

Something about the idea of "philosopher stones" just appeals to me.

Roachman, if i get them and everything works well I´d be pm you soon.

Thanks for the answers

But can you grow it in agar and then transfer a wedge of mycelium to a LC?

Re: Curiosity about Mexicana A and Tampanensis [Re: FGL]

I transfer the stone itself to grains, that way I know I have a good sclerotia producing strain. I'm no fan of LC. I get quicker and more secure results using grain to grain transfers. Liquid mycelium syringes can easily be made from a jar of grains for further inoculations, but mycelium grows faster on grains than it does in liquid.
