What's the proper way to backup my computer so I can switch to Linux?

I was just gonna go out and buy an external HD (I'm using a laptop) and copy and paste :shrug:

just install it on the external drive.

partition the drive so you have a majority of your space in a FAT drive, while the linux will need an ext2 partition. You can then move commonly used files to the fat drive, and access them from both linux and windows?

burn what you need on a dvd, do each one twice to be safe, or, get an external harddrive/usb mass storage, and save everything you need on there...

if you have a diskette drive you could use thousands of those or something...lol
