I'm the same way...it's a great browser. I'd use Linux but I've heard it sucks for games and all I play is BF2...

could someone explain to me why the average person would want to run Linux?
I've been running winxp for years now, no viruses, blue screens, runs all my games...so the whole linux promotion thing doesn't really make sense to me.

I have it sitting on my desk right now but not enough RAM to play it. It's a bummer.

I'll field this, as I held the same opinion up until about a month ago. Windows is a good OS. XP always ran good for me. But once I got a taste of Linux, I realized just how plain, unimaginative and unacceptable Windows is.
A few of the advantages I've found with my linux distro (kubuntu): It's actually more user friendly than Windows. It runs faster for me (and I have a very old machine). It's insanely flexible and can be precisely customized very easily. It's so damn easy to get and install programs. A new release comes out like every 6 months, keeping it on the cutting edge. The community is outstanding!!!! They will help you with anything! It's made with 100% love.
Now, to be fair, I'll give the disadvantages I've encountered: Games have to be emulated (not sure how much this affects performance). Lots of open source equivalent software isn't quite where it needs to be (gimp (photoshop) is my main complaint). As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a solid all-around media player that compares with itunes or wmp... yet. And I'd literally kill for something like Windows Media Center or Mac Front Row. Hardware support can be touchy (though I haven't had any problems).
Do yourself a favor and give it a try (it's free after all). You might love it, you might hate it.
I myself still haven't made up my mind. I'm either going to build a new 100% linux box, or I'm going to bite the bullet and pay dearly for a Mac (as great as kubuntu is, it still doesn't rival Mac OSX).
Hope this helps.

i actually ran linux for years before i started using xp...those were the days of win95/98, when blue screens were an every day event
but once xp came out and i found it extremely stable, i made the permanant switch. im not a programmer or anything so it doesnt make sense to me to run it.

I agree with the ethic found in gnu/linux: http://www.fsf.org/licensing/essays/free-sw.html
I do not agree with the ethic and business practices of Microsoft.

the sheer number of pirated windows installations and office installations is a boon to M$ regardless of whether or not those people paid for it. the fact is, the workplace DOES pay for every single copy of every single M$ product and the biggest reason businesses buy into M$'s lock-in is because Joe User has been using Windows at home and it greatly reduces training and support costs to provide him with the familiar Windows environment.
it's all a vicious circle that I try to avoid. i admit that XP is a damn good OS from a corporate cubicle drone POV and it works pretty well on the home desktop but only because all the hardware and software produced is written for it as a priority. i still keep windows around simply because the rest of the world uses it. I have not found a suitable replacement for Excel or MSMoney/QuickBooks. i am booted into Linux as often as possible and i push open source answers to those who ask questions.

"you can actually play pretty much all Steam games on linux"
And we just got Quake 4 and Doom 3. Battlefield 2 works alright in Cedega.

I really don't understand the whole Linux thing, nobody can really present a solid arguement as to why the average person should run it. I've tried it before and let's just say it's not that easy to get everything up and running perfectly. I've had to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out why my network, video and sound aren't working properly. then after a few days when I finally got everything working properly I find that games run like shit compared to windows...so it really makes no sense for me to run it. like ive already said before, i havnt gave ms a single penny...so i really dont see where the problem is.

Then it has been a while since you tried it. It typically takes me 20 minutes to have configured install up and running. Compelling reasons to run it abound. It comes with all of the tools you need to do just about everything. It is for practical purposes virus free. It is more stable than Microsoft's offerings. It is free to use or modify.
