Remote Access to the home computer?
    #4241545 - 05/31/05 09:28 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, here's the scenario. I should be getting cable internet in a few weeks. Now once I get it is there any way for me to gain access to my computer when I'm down at my dad's house?(he's an hour away and also has highspeed)

I'd like to be able to have a Remote Access account so I can access my files from his house. I realize that there's programs such as PC Anywhere, but I'm not lookin for that. Just simple access to my home computer. Is it possible?

If your using Windows XP Pro [Re: Anno]

Sorry if this goes down alleys you don't need/know, your request was quite brief an uninformative....

Terminal Services is a great solution for accessing Windows machines remotely. To configure this go to System in the Control panel, go to the Remote tab, select 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer option'. Also verify that your user has the necessary access rights to log in within the 'Select remote users...' option.

In the event that you have a static IP address you can simply record that and use that to connect remotely. If you are getting a dynamic IP address from your ISP you will have to use dynamic DNS, www.dyndns.org I've found to work fine. Your routing may have an inbuilt function for DynDNS, but assuming you don't have a router try one of the clients found here to keep your IP address updated, http://www.dyndns.org/support/clients/dyndns.html.

Port 3389 must be open on your firewall (if you have one) and must be forwarded to your computer's internal IP address.

To access your computer from a remote location simply run Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol and tap in the static IP address or the Dynamic DNS name and connect (hopefully  ).

You should change the thread title to "A thousand ways to get access on a remote computer".

this is what i've always used to access windows computers remotely.

although i'd recommend to switch linux, and use ssh for a hell of a lot easier, quicker, safer, and better alternative!

actually a trojan isn't a bad idea.

you can use sub7 to easily gain access ot all aspects of your home computer from afar.

however, i agree with krishma, the BEST idea would be linux, but thats ususally not reasonable in the microsoft world.

f you only have certain things you want to be able to get at, you could use apache. just drag everything you want to the /www/ folder and access it as a webpage. or you could get pretty ornate and actually put together a webpage and host it from your computer.

but, no real need to do that, apache will do on its own. there is a solution to this called WAMP5. you can find it on http://sourceforge.net . it installs apache, php, and mysql. it will "work out of the box". meaning, once you install it go to http://localhost/ and you will be browsing your /www/ directory via a webpage. anything you put in that directory you will be able to access from away from your computer by opening a browser and going to http://YourIPAddress

also, if you want to tinker with any php programs or mysql, it will all be rady for you. it also comes with phpMyAdmin, but you dont need to use php or mysql to run the page.

once you get it running, remove everything (including the index.php) and when you access it, it will just show a list for everything in the /www/ directory.

i'm a tad opiated so if i said the exact same thing87324 times, please excuse me ;]

https://secure.logmein.com/

It's like gotomypc.com, but it's free for the fully functional version. There is a paid version with some bells and whistles that most non-business users will never need. It's simpler and more polished than VNC.

I've found it to be fast, secure, and reliable. It's made by the same company (3AM Labs) that developed RemotelyAnywhere.
