Unlocking a windows directory?
    #6775887 -

I was messing around with a program that password protects windows directories...

Well, something went wrong, i reinstalled windows, and now I cannot access this directory. It gives me "access denied"

It is a new install of windows, on a new hard drive. The directory that is not accessable is on a seperate drive, with no operating system, just some music, and programs.

I thought the program modified how windows views access, but I guess it changed something on the drive itself.

Any ideas on what may have happend, and how i can fix it

If the program uses the Windows encryption infrastructure, you won't be able to recover the data because it's not encrypted with your login key. Rather, Windows creates a session key at install time. If you reinstall the OS, that key is lost and the data permanently gone.

If you need to secure data, use PGP instead.

hah.

Dude just use a linux live cd.. mount both hdds and then copy the contents of the file onto your new windows install.

Guarentee it will work.

Code:

mkdir /mnt/old /mnt/new
cfdisk # find out which hdd is which
mount /dev/hdaX /mnt/old
mount /dev/hdaY /mnt/new
cp /mnt/old/path/to/encrypted/file /mnt/new/file

Problem solved.

you realize you're talking to a root-ninja right?

tak, if you encrypted it, it's gone now... the keys are likely gone. You should still be able to delete the folder though.

If that is what his problem is that should work.  I am not sure it is though I think his problem lies more in the program he used to encrypt it.

If he was a real root-ninja he'd know how to get into the file.

Theres oh so much more to rooting than

nmap -sV -O -P0 target.com
gcc -o exploit exploit.c
./exploit

Silly skiddies.

I didn't see this before. What program were you using?

It depends on how the program protects the folder.

Some encryption mechanisms can be realistically broken, some can't.

It would help if we knew what the program was.
