MJ need advice

K so I got my 3 seeds to germinate and I put them into potting soil / vermaculite mixture about 1 inch down root up them coved them over. Now the question I have the light right above them and the soil top drys fast should I be spraying the soil everyday to make shure it says moist or should I leave it for a while cause MJ needs lots less water?

ouch, i hope you meant to say you planted the seed with the tap root DOWN, not UP. The tap root needs to be facing the bottom of your pot, it grows down to find water and then pushes the plant out of the top of the soil.

Also, one inch down is way too far, at most you should be the length of a pencil eraser into your soil.

Don't overwater your seedlings, just because the top of the soil gets dry doesn't mean underneath it's not soaked. I usually water seedlings around once a week, twice at the absolute most if my room was particularly warm that week.

No, the tap root should be planted facing up as they ALWAYS do a one hundred and eighty degree turn and then grow down.

If you plant them facing down they'll grow up the down which wastes seedling energy.

This has been observed and proven over and over again.

Keep them damp until they break the surface, after that only water them when the soil is dry, not just the top of the soil but all of it.

You'll know when they need water by the weight of the pots.

hmm, i honestly didn't know that, logically it wouldn't make sense to plant something with its roots facing the top of the soil.  I always germinate my seeds inside of peat pots so i don't have to transplant the seed into the soil.  So in my case it's plant seed, let sit, wait for seed leaves to break surface, transplant, and grow :smile:

I'll have to do some reading on what you just wrote, i really didn't know that's what happened.

thongster- my bad, take hanky's advice, like i said i never transplant germinated seeds.

well when I put them into the soil last night they where placed sprout up seed down so lucky me lmao

eh, it's doubtful, especially if he has them in a decent sized pot. With no root system to soak up the water it'll stay saturated within the soil.

I just drop my seed about 1/4 inch into the Jiffy Cubes. I don't pay any attention to which side is which. I have never had a problem. The Root cap is on the pointed side and the shoot apex is on the other.

I can't find anything about it in the "Marijuana Horticulure: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible" by J. Cervantes neither.

I was under the assumption that gravity and sunlight dictate which way the sprout/roots grow.

K ya there in pots that are fairly large, and I have been watching the soil and spraying the surface when its no longer moist, so far no sprouts, but iam still hopefull :tongue:

I suggest keepin the soil semi-moist at all times until they pop though the surface. Dont overwater of course because that'll drown them. Just be patient though I've had seedlings take as long as two-three weeks before popping up.
