Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Anyone with this disorder ever receive medications for it?
Can you name what kind and whether it was helpful or not?

I had OCD bad about 4-6 years ago, but those days are pretty much long gone. Sometimes now I think I get low level GAD intermittently. Not sure though.

I've never been diagnosed with anything, because back when I was experiencing what was probably generalized anxiety (and occasional panic attacks)I was completely opposed to the medical establishment. Still am, but now I suppose they can be good for some things. I dealt with my anxiety by psychoanalysing myself, and thinking and breathing my way through it. It reappears now and again, but more mildly and now I have the cognitive tools to deal with it more or less effectively. Drugs might help, if they do, that's a choice that's ok to make. I personally feel like drugs are best for an emergency situation, and that they should never replace the hard work necessary to really understand and heal from such problems.

Screw drugs your getting anxiety for a reason, drugs will just mask the problem and you could end up going in circles for years. We don't have good or bad feelings for they serve an equal purpose. Your sub-conscious is sending you a message. Anxiety is different from normal fear because its fear from the inside, your subconscious has picked up on an anomaly. Somehow your probably not being true to yourself. Take NiamhNxy advice and try meditating so you can clear your mind and figure out whats going on. Pickup some valarian and st.johns wort for when it becomes unbearable.

Right, St. John's Wort is good stuff. You gotta take it everyday, just like anti-depressants it takes about 2 weeks to kick in and then you're doing fine. Passion Flower and California Poppy are supposed to be pretty good for that too. Trust yourself, trust your instinct, and that you are absolutely capable of working through this stuff.

All of this is good information, but anxiety can also be caused by a chemical inbalance (serotonin?). That can cause anxiety. Or anxious thoughts can cause the imbalance. But if the imbalance is the root cause, and not the thoughts, then getting rid of those thoughts is only chopping at the weed, but not digging up the root.

In a way.  But what I'm saying is that if a person has a physical reason for the chemical imbalance (like a thyroid problem or something, for a very non-medical example), then fixing the thoughts will not fix the problem.  Chances are, you won't be able to fix the thoughts.  :shrug:  I don't know. 

Kind of like, if you break your arm.  Of course, the pain and thoughts are in your head.  But if you manage to stop the thoughts, that doesn't mean your arm is healed.  And then when you hit your arm, the thoughts are probably going to come back.
