My goddam computer hangs and hangs and hangs and hangs
    #6794571 -

Platform: Microsoft Windows XP
Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2
Version of common control components: 5.82.2900
RAM: 248 MB
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz (1596 MHz)

DELL

I have a really crappy computer; I can't even do a little multi-tasking without it hanging up like crazy. I feel like I put a lot of stress on it and I'm afraid of like, HD failure or whatever. On the bright side, I use a virus/spyware scanner, I've deleted all bullshit running processes, and I defrag with Raxco PerfectDisk.

I'm just afarid that it's gonna die on me any minute now because I've really pushed it to it's limits--I've basically used it as a vessel for downloading music--I've loaded the 20 gig HD full of FLACs.

I'm also tempted to delete Windows and replace it with a nice, lightweight version of Linux (I feel that it would do a world of good for my computer--kind of in a holistic way), but I'm not in the position to back-up all my files (I was told that switching operating systems could lead to data loss--partitions and shit like that)

Oh, and let me just add that I get the "Your system is low on Virtual memory; windows is increasing the size of your..." warning.

I have a feeling switching to Linux is gonna make my computer run smoothly.

It might, as long as you are careful and not playing with everything bleeding edge all at once.

JunkFood your problem is not enough RAM. KDE won't be much better than Explorer. Linux is great but it can't magically create memory out of thin air. Don't switch for the wrong reason. You should drop $50 on another 512MB, or plan on running Xfce. Trust me it will be like having a new computer.

Or any other non-super-bloated window manager will do. KDE is by far the worst for that. I like openbox/fluxbox for minimalism (uses very little memory or processing!).

So, I guess I have an excuse to not be doing Folding-at-home

Nope, because you have a pretty good CPU and Folding isn't very memory intensive.

But I don't fold on my laptop either, something so tiny just doesn't seem like it's made to run full tilt 24/7.
