Looking to purchase a computer

I am looking for a desktop computer. It will be mainly used for school work, internet use, and playing and storing movies and music.
Requirements: AMD (not too particular about the speed) 150+ gb HD 1gb ram
Other than that, I'm not too picky. I also need a monitor. Between the PC and monitor, I would like to not spend any more than $600. Does anyone know any places that have good deals on computers?

I'm looking for something like that.

first off i would not buy a computer that does not have a 64bit processor, or dual core, as that may be the new wave, so dont waste the money, other than that, i personally would not buy manufactured computers, as most are made with shitty mainboards, sound, and graphics. I would build one, but my parents buy premade computers, as you can get them for pretty cheap when there are good sales on them. Check officemax, we have computers for as cheap as 399 sometimes, but with Sempron 3500+ processors, which are only single core...

I dont think you will find a better deal on a low-mid range bundle than best buy. I mean they basically give you like 30% off.
One thing I would suggest is that you get an LCD monitor and not a CRT. Some people like CRTs and they can be better quality but I don't like them at all. They are bulky/heavy and they can flicker if you look at them the right way.
Another thing, you might not need 1 gig of ram. I know gamers who don't even use that much and many comps still come with 512M. Memory will add a bit to the overall cost.
I like newegg.com , but then again I put mine together which is expensive..They have some good deals on systems though too.

you can get a dell at that price for about those specs with a lcd monitor. i used to be a hater on manufactured computers... and i still am to a point. i would steer clear of compaq. i'm not sure if they still do this, but they used to be proprietary meaning you could only use compaq parts for things like mobo and power supply. also, if you open it, you void the warrenty. you can open and add whatever you want to a dell and they dont care. plus you get the printer. if i were to buy a manufactured computer, it would be a dell or lenova.
btw, for those of you that havent seen it yet, i got to play with one of these at work a few weeks ago and it was friggin awesome: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m2010?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19
way out of my price range, but very very sweet indeed.

I wouldn't necessarily be against doing this, but I have no experience doing so, and I would still want to get a decent system + monitor for not much more than $500. Is this doable?

I'm gonna say look on www.dell.com. Really cheap desktops and I think they'll offer even more than what you're looking for. I've had my Dell laptop for a few years and I've "driven it to hell." It's held up unbelievably well.

I don't think you would be able to build a computer that has better or comparable specs to a pre-packaged bundle for <$500. However, the components would generally be of better quality and the comp would be more flexable for future upgrades. Don't forget that you would have to buy windows and everything too, it sells OEM for $89.

Honestly spend another 100 or 150 get a pentium 4, then take a lil extra cash and buy another 512mb off newegg.com and put it in yourself. Dell loves to kill people on upgrades.

A celeron is fine if you are just going to do work, internet, and basic media stuff. It is a little bit slower but we are just talking about an extra second or two to start a program like firefox or winamp, and some functions like opening or unzipping files are just slightly slower. It sounds like you are not a power user (i.e. constantly opening and closing different programs, using many progs at once, gaming, media editing, etc.) and you really do not want to spend much so I think it would be ok.
Just curious, what are you using now?

Celerons are garbage and not worth the money at all. Another 100 or 150 dollars will net you a good quality pentium 4 that will outlast the celeron by a year at least if not more. The low cache neuters their abilities. Especially if you want to do anything other than browse the shroomery and chat on aim.

A 2.53 GHZ celeron can easily "be mainly used for school work, internet use, and playing and storing movies and music."
I still have a 800mhz celeron laying around that does all that.
