Psilocybe cubensis "Golden Teacher" on wheat straw and buffal dung
    #673046 - 06/11/02 10:06 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Strain: Golden Teacher from the sporeworks

substrate: pelletized wheat straw and buffalo dung (70/30 in volume)

spawn: millet, 1 pint raw per tray

casing: 9 parts peat, 1 part vermiculite, 1 part limestone.

extras: coco fibers

procedure:

Substrate was pasteurized for 90 minutes, then strained and left overnigth.
In the morning the job started: a layer of 1 in. of substrate was added in a tray, then a layer of spawn (1/4 of the total jar) was spreaded on the substrate.
4 layers ( substrate and spawn) were made in the tray, with a final one (the 5th) of only substrate.
Then a very thin layer of coco fiber was added, only to protect the substrate from contams.

The tray was left in the incubator until all the coco layer was colonized.

Then a casing layer of 1 inch was added, quite rough but omogeneus.

the tray was placed in a warm place to let the mycelium colonizes the casing...

once some rizo?s popped up the tray was moved to a styrofoam box with a plexi cover.

vented 3-6 times a day depending of free time and misted everyday until primordia formed...

club--

very impressive results. Can you give some additional info on the relationship of the spawn to the substrate? I?d really appreciate it. Does the spawn not even touch the substrate until the casing?

appreciatively,

di11rod

yes the spawn is spreaded over the substrate...actually it touchs it
perhaps i didn?t explained in a clear manner
4 layers of substrate and spawn were made (substrate-spawn-substrate-spawn-ext)

no? multispore germination on agar, isolation of a fruiting culture, and spawning a bulk substrate....if this isn?t advanced please tell us what is....

vatoloco: pelletized wheat straw is straw shredded and compressed in small cilinders, used as horse and cow food.

well this is my first try using a pasteurized bulk substrate, so i don?t have more data about it, but for what i know, pasteurization time should be between 1 and 2 hrs

Thanks Club,

This post is very inspiring to me...Your results are my goal right now...

I?m glad to hear you say that about past. times. I?ve been only pasteurizing my poo for 30-45 mins and have been having problems.

I hope the longer past. times will solve all my problems...

Thanks for asking him that Vatoloco!

i?m harvesting the second flush right now, 765 grams wet, including a very big teacher of 63 grams, and the flush isn?t finished yet!
took some pics, but have to finish the roll before posting some new pics

Club99, Great post. Your skill level is impressive. I strive to be a great mycologist one day. Few Questions:

1.)What substrate/spawn ratio would you estimate?

Protecting dung w/t coir shows your experiance & knowledge!
2.)The lack of spawn, causes slow colonization time, allowing contams but b/c coir is protecting substrate, its not so important?

3.)As Dung/straw colonizes it creates small puddles on top. Does coir absorb
excess water?

thanks

1) i think something like 6:1

2) depends, with temps>27-28?c time is critical, you have a window of opportunity to completely colonize the substrate of about 5-7 days, so more spawn is needed. otherwise contams will grow...
Consider the fact that with pasteurization you?re not killing all the contams as with sterilization, so if the substrate isn?t colonized in the window time bacteria will grow...
If the temps are lower, 25-26?c, then you have more time and then you can use a lower substrate: spawn ratio.
Recently i had the opportunity to visit an agaricus farm (in fact, thanks to this i understood how a casing must be to achieve best results, but this is another story and i?m preparing a long post about it wich i?ll post it in the next days..)
BTW in the farm they use a 100:1 substrate/spawn ratio, but colonization temps are much lower (24?) than the cubs, so they can use such a small ratio. with warmer species everything is more critical...for the reason i posted above...

3) not completely, but the casing material will do, anyway the water on top is harmless...
