Hi cbull...it's not a contam. I have a few tannish spots on my cakes as well. Anno told me that's common and nothing to worry about. I noticed it around the center of where the mycellium patches started to grow outwards. Mine aren't dark though...so unless yours are BROWN then it might not be the same thing. Anno didn't say what caused it but that it's normal and happens from time to time.
The mycellium themselves are still rhizo and healthy...just a bit tannish.

no prob. The tannish areas on mine haven't grown in size at all...wonder if it has to do with fast rhizomorphic growth stretching the mycellium at all? Just a newbie pondering.
Good luck with the grow!

Yeah it's just water condensing in the jars and touching the mycelium. Everythings good to go. My first post (newbie post) was April 12, 2000 at 5:32PM ET. I hadn't seen growth in one day so I posted and asked what was wrong. I was unexperienced then. Growing shrooms is fun. The result are grand as long as you follow the procedures. Good luck and let me know how your bounty comes out. Peace

I get some discoloration in my colonizing jars as well. The brownish, yellow area is just water damage and possibly some invitro pinning. The invitro pinning looks slightly yellowish brown.

I've had the same discoloration a couple times before, everything still turns out alright. I actually thought it may have been a heat issue, but I guess not. You learn something new every day when you're doing this.
