my motherboard is fried and I'm looking to purchase a new one and i found this link for a motherboard/ processor. i really don't know a whole lot about computers but would this be an ideal product to pick up for gaming and music? i have a 256mb video card i would like to install onto this as well as 640mb ram. not to mention all my hard drives and other crap i have laying around. i found this at askacs.com

MSI K8MM3-V Motherboard w/AMD 3000 Sempron 754P Processor and Fan

I bought this motherboard a few weeks ago when my board died, it works pretty good, almost never crashes. I don't really play games though, also the fact that you can only get 2 gb of ram isn't good. It really depends on what games you wanna play on it, though its fine for music and movies.

MSI is a good brand. Make sure your ram and video card are compatible with that mobo. I would go with something in the socket 939 variety instead of that 754 crap. Oh, and order from newegg.com. They are often the cheapest and always the most reliable.

Build a new computer. That socket is completely dead.

I bought that mobo/cpu combo for a comp i built for my mom. it's nice and fast with regular processes, but i don't think it'd fair too well for games. you'd need a decent video card, preferably a faster cpu, and you'd want to max out the 2 gig of ram you can have with high quality sticks.

You don't need 2GB of ram for games. The extra gig is overboard and should be considered a luxury. If your other parts are well-matched and your computer well-maintained, 1GB will do you fine.

The best price/performance match right now is a socket 939 motherboard with the nforce4 ultra chipset and an athlon 64 4000+ with 2x512MB sticks of PC3200 DDR.

perhaps it's just because i buy valueram, but i had some annoying choppy issues with just 1 gig in my machine.

Extra ram is the "easy fix" for slow computers. Many technicians will immediately tell you that you need more ram because it produces an immediate and noticeable effect. It becomes a shortcut to fixing the computer properly. This is what the whole vista 2GB of ram bullshit is about. The OS is a mess and rather than fixing it, they tell YOU to buy a faster computer.

Anyway, sorry for ranting. 2GB of ram will really help when you are multitasking. i.e. when you are surfing the shroomery, watching futurama, downloading more futurama, playing insanaquarium, defragmenting your hard drive, and writing emails.

well the only game i really play is quake 3 online. my old motherboard was an amd athlon in an emachine and that seem to work fine for the 5 months that it ran.

Ha! I always hear "5 months" and "emachine" in the same sentence.
