Best Grains for use as bulk spawn and hydro-pod

Well, the title basicly describes my question. What whole grain would be best to use as spawn a bulk compost? And what Whole grain would be best to put in a hydro-pod?
I dont expect that both are the same grain, but that would be cool.
Thanks for the info guys.
Also, what is everyone's view of the hydro-pod?
Worth the buy or not?

I've been growing for year. i'm just wondering if the pod offers better results. Better by enough to off set the cost.
