The Artistic Impulse

A recent debate about tattoos got me thinking about humankind's impulse to decorate themselves and their surroundings. the archeological record indicates that it is this aspect of our nature that set us apart from our Neanderthal relatives. It isn't quite clear what evolutionary advantage this provided us, but perhaps it is an outward manifestation of the real advantage: symbolic thought. Our ability to abstract meaning from pictures, symbols, and sounds opened the floodgates to a higher level of communication than was ever possible before. Language and art seem to be two aspects of the same thing. Along with language, it seems that religion is also a development in symbolic thought. Mythology is full of archetypes that symbolize something deep within us. I contend that it is symbolic thought that makes us truly human. It gives us the capacity to understand ourselves and our world in ways that no other animal can.

those racial distinctions are not clear and might best be even more blurred we are well mixed now.

also, symbolism is not proprietary to homo sapiens.

tattoos are more like a cat making its fur stand on edge to give the appearance of being bigger.

there is nothing deep and/or mystical about getting inked, no matter how many ways you want to try and justify such attention whoring.

There is a time to bring ones' inner concepts to the outside and there is a time to work on one's inner concepts themselves, also by input from the outside.
Inner concepts brought to the outside can stabilize the concepts as well by this feedback mechanism.

I think it is interesting if two inner concepts from two persons can be brought to discussion by externalisation.

It is true that there is nothing inherently mystical about, although it certainly can serve such a purpose.  There are as many reasons for getting tattoos are there are people who get them, but the underlying theme behind them is the artistic impulse.  What you ignorantly call "attention whoring" here is the purpose behind all art: to convey convey ideas, emotions, or simple beauty.

Obviously the artistic impulse did not just come from nowhere, but our ability to think symbolically is advanced to such a degree that we can create new symbols and even entire languages. BTW, do you think chimps attach any meaning to their finger painting?
