San Pedro, or so it seems?
    #6624822 -

I spotted this cactus at the local garden centre today, im fairly sure its san pedro as it looks like the san pedro's a google image search throws up but theres no way to be certain . . . :xtc: . . except that way i suppose.

Does anyone know of any other non active cacti that look this close to a san pedro? or am i safe to assume it is a san pedro?

sorry can i add; it wasnt marked on the pot's label what species it was. all it said was 'cactus'  hence my uncertainty

Ive got 7 pedros and 8 torches on my porch, that one looks like a san pedro but mine are alot lighter of a green color.. 6 ribs is right, the spines look almost right (what color are they?), but as I said the color is a little off, its not unheard of for them to be that color, especially if grown in a shaded area. To be 100% sure, do a taste test. Cut a VERY tiny bit off, and if it tastes so bitter it hurts, its a san pedro.

lol i would like to see a pic of your cactus.
all my pedros have a blue hue/shade to them. unhurd of???

also the lighter green yellow of a cacti means it has lots of sun most of the cacti growers i know use shadecloth to get them that nice blue/green color

you need to go to cacti 101

lets see some pics of your cacti

the spines are dark brown to black, in groups of 3.

its not actually coloured blue like in the photo. its actually light green with a weird whiteish / blueish dust on its surface but it can be rubbed off.

il have to do the taste test tomorrow. wont all cacti taste really bitter?

Yes, most cacti are bitter and that is a myrtillo cactus. non-active. great for grafting.

Read my article a little more carefully, I said its NOT unheard of. I also said the darker blue green color is from less light, such as a shade net or greenhouse. Mine are grown in full sunlight, if I want to see a blue cactus ill look at my Torch.

Any specific details one could look for when determining if it's T. peruvianus/pachanoi or some inactive sp.?

I've got pedros with 5,6,7 and 8 ribs. Saying they always have six is ridiculous.

The cactus in this thread is a blue Myrtle.

thats myrtillo cactus geometrizans my friend.it actually does contain nice alkaloids but in to little amounts to even include it along with trichocereus pachanoi,tr. peruvianus,tr. bridgesii, and tr. tershekii.

many cactus contain alkaloids in small amounts.
you would need about 20 ft. of the myrtillo as apposed to 12-18 inches of pachanoi or peruvianus.

order some lophophora williamsii or diffusa and graft the seedlings.

the only way to know a trich is to look at loads of pics of trichs, spend some time on a cacti forum and read about them, hold trichs in your hand (not literally lol) and u will soon learn to spot them

most common cacti people pick up thinking they are a trichocereus sp, are myrtillocactus and cereus peruvianus...
(cereus particularly cos people see "peruvianus" on the label and get all excited)

its usually somewhere between 5 & 8 for pedro's. they often gain/lose ribs too...

First of all, it would help if a pic for ID purposes had better lighting.

Second, a tatse test is not effective.

The ribs are too wide for pachanoi IMO. Pachanoi could have six ribs, but that is one of the less reliable ID factors because even cuttings of the same cactus can differ in the number of rib their pups give off.  ID guides generally give you a wide range rib count instead of a set number.  Pachanoi's also tend to be more streamlined than bumpy when you look at their outline. Yours is a bit curvy and you can even see one of the bumps in the shadow on the wall. This isn't a classic ID factor, but rather my own observation that adds to the other evidence. It looks closer to bridgesii (which can be bumpy and have wider and fewer ribs that pach.) than pachanoi, but I would trust these guys with blue myrtle.  Bridgesii tends to have larger and thicker spines from what I've seen. If you can't accept the likelihood of what it is, there may be a possibility that it could be a hybrid, but you have to admit it does look remarkably close to those myrtillo cacti in the pic, especially in the bottom left. I also know that royer, mitch, schwip and uarewhatueat all know their shit when it comes to the garden, so if they are all in agreement, as am I , that it's not a pachanoi there's a good chance they're/we're right.

On the bright side, if you don't have anything else to graft, you can cut it into smalller pieces, root them and graft pachanoi tips. they'd be true pedros and you won't waste the few inches of your cutting that would notrmally be underground.

take this advice and when you know it's trichocereus pachanoi you will be satisfied.it works like this;i walked into lowe's today and spotted a plant that resembled my psychotria viridis and knew immediatly it was coffea arabica.$1.97,bought 3.it was labeled as coffea arabica.

keep reading, you'd be suprised at what you stumble upon when you know what plants look like.

thanks again to everyone, il hopefully have some tiny san pedro soon, im gettin some seeds from my brother
