Sterilizing Coco coir???

hey everyone,
i have a question for anyone who knows the answer.. my friend is trying casing for the first time with wheat berries... now he is waiting for the jars to colonize now, but what he was wondering was if he sould get some Coco coir..many people told him it can be used by itself in casing, this way there is no mixing involved...layer on bottom ,colonized grains in the middle and some Coco coir on top.. my question exactly is do i need to pressure cook the Coco coir before adding it to a casing? he could pressure cook it by putting it in quart jars then saving it for when needed.. i do know you need to rehydrate it before you use it, but im unclear if it needs to be sterile... thanks all p.s. if anyone has any input on other ideas feel free to post -PeZ

Coir usually doesn't ahve to be sterlized for a few reasons. One being that MOST is presterlized and packaged pretty damn well. Just by packaging the coco, they put it into BRICKS of it. They are created by large amounts of steam heat and pressure.
I usually pasturize it to be on the safe side. Take a boiling pot of water, let cool for about 5 mins and then drop in some of the brick. The water will absorb it very quickly. let sit for about an hour and you've got yourself some pasturized coco.

listen to angryshroom!
and you don't need a bottom layer of Coco Coir.
just a top layer will be fine!

i never sterilize or treat my coco in any way other than soaking it in water in preparation for applying it. it certainly can't hurt. any extra step to maintain sterility is worth it. i'm just lazy, and that's why i don't sterilize.
i've ordered from Discount Hydroponics for a long time, always with great results.
take care! stay safe... -bizarro

LaCasta - On the site click on products - Go to the search function - Select all categories - Type in Gro Brick - Then hit search - It should bring you to the Coco Fiber they have.
