Long overdue new electric guitar
    #6581220 -

What guitars do you guys play?  What do you like about them?

What should I stay away from?  What's overrated?  Underrated?

How much did you spend on your guitar?

Here's my situation:

I've been playing half-assedly for 8 (!) years and I'm only now starting to take my playing more seriously.  I've had a love/hate relationship with the guitar... it's complicated. Part of the reason I never got serious before is because I've been playing a cheapo guitar through a cheapo amp.

I'm playing the Squier Stratocaster I got for Christmas 1998.:(  I've played worse guitars but it really is a POS now. It has trouble staying in tune, the electronics are shot, the tone is unexciting.  I'm a fool for having played it so long.

Anyway, it's time to upgrade but I don't know where to start.  I went to Long & McQuade yesterday and just poked around... I didn't really know what I was looking for...

I want a Gibson LP but they are way too much ($2300-$3000).  I definitely want to stay under $1000.

In any case I definitely want one with double-coils and a narrower neck than my Strat.  They had some Godins that looked cool, but I haven't heard too much about their reputation.

Anyway I'm just getting started but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

BTW I'm not as concerned about the amp... that will be next.

I've played almost every brand of guitar and the Les Paul is my favorite.
LPs have the warmest tone, smoothest action, and best sustain for the price.
The fat neck takes getting used to, but they're so popular for a reason.

Unless you're getting a vintage or plan to have it worked on, stay away from used guitars.

I've been trying a few lesser known luthiers, I just spent $1,850 on a Jerry Bear Bolt style guitar.
I've never spent more than a grand on an axe, I'll post pics when I get it.

I was going to get the Les Paul BFG w/ P-90.
Definitely the best axe for under a grand, imo.

I know that a Les Paul is what I really want... I didn't know you could find one for that price range. I'm just not sure if I could buy a guitar without playing it first.

Get the Epiphone LP Standard, 500-600$, fabulous and wonderful.

Nice inlays, good sound, hardware and quality.

Epiphone above 500$ is pretty good.

The cheapest Gibsons are way better than the high end Epiphones, imo.

I play a 76 Strat and an Ibanez s470... for most stuff I prefer the Ibanez but for blues and jazz I always use the strat. Depends on what you are playin in my opinion.

That's another thing I've often wondered about. I'll definitely make a point of trying both and deciding what's important to me.

Ibanezeses are another make I don't know much about. What do you like / not like about your Ibanez?

You could go for the Epi Les Paul for around $600, or maybe try one of these Washburn Idol series axes out:

Flamed top, authentic Seymour Duncan humbuckers, gold hardware, etc.

I've heard that they are very nice for the money, and I think this would fit the bill in your situation.  If you could find one for $600, you'd still have $400 for a 20-40W tube amp.

Also, for $1000, you could customize a Carvin.  They sell these direct from factory, so you can get some really nice features for a relatively low price.

schecter's cannot be beat for sheer value. the sustain and feel of them, for the price that you get is just unreal (I own a C-1 Classic and it's just amazing).

they come with f-ing nice humbuckers too.

Yeah, I think the C-1's come with Seymour Duncan 59'/JB set or maybe JB/Jazz, I can't remember. The Schecters are definitely worth checking out.

I just checked out Schecter's website and I'm intrigued. What model do you have? They have a million different ones.

EDIT: Sorry I'm an idiot... C-1 classic.

Anyway I'm gonna go to my local Schecter dealer and play one Thursday or Friday.

Hey BTW thanks for your responses so far everybody... I know there is much guitar knowledge and experience in this forum.

I think Ibanez make great guitars for relatively low £ but if you've got $1000 to play with then probably not...

Haha I wouldn't say I have $1000 to play with, but I might consider spending that much if I fall in love with the right guitar. Ibanez is on my "to check out" list.
