restringing an (electric) guitar ?
    #6130795 -

so, i don't know if it's less or more embarassing to say that I've been playing guitar for over 10 years on a pretty regular basis, jammed with many kids who are quite proficient musically and can play some seriously technical songs with ease ...

.. but, there's one thing I've never been able to do ... string a guitar.

I found it very natural to pick up on playing the guitar and feel it out ... but when it comes to restringing, I just CAN'T GET IT.  I've read tons of guides online and tried working it out myself ... but I just don't get it somehow.  The strings either become too taught (sp?) and snap, or are too loose, and I don't know how to progress further ...

It seems simple enough, but maybe I AM lame enough to need somebody to guide me on this one, before I waste another set of strings.

Anybody who has good working knowledge of restringing and also has the ability to dictate the motions, please post here =)

I could SHOW you how to do it, but that doesnt help here. What I would advise you to do is go to a guitar shop or to a friend and ask them to show you how to do it. It might seem embarrassing but sometime you just have to bite the bullet and show a little humility to progress. It isnt easy to string a guitar at first, but once you know the correct process you will get a lot better.

Well, some things that can affect it, is how many times the string is wrapped up around the tuning peg. It could also be whatever brand of strings your using... only thing I can recommend, from the sounds of your problem, is to get an electric tuner. If that doesn't get your strings to where they're supposed to be, your guitar is either really messed up, or you're doing something really silly. Maybe you're putting the wrong strings in the wrong spots... it really is a diffcult thing to help people with online. Never mind. Pretend I didn't say anything!

It's great advice. Some guitar shops have promos where they restring guitars for free all day long. those are the guys to ask 'cause they can restring a guitar in minutes.

thanks for the advice ... I originally got my guitar tuned every so often at this little guitar shop by a guy that played right handed guitar left-handed and could tune it in a moment ... so I felt comfortable, until they went out business ...

(probably because Guitar Center owns a monopoly on every street in Southern California)

so I'd say it's about time I learned somehow ... I was planning on taking some music theory / guitar classes soon anyway, so I'm sure I'll get pretty good by then ...

Generally, you want to leave enough slack to wrap the coated strings at least two or three times around the string post, making sure there is no overlap. For plain steel string (the G, B, and E strings), you want to loop the string over and under before you start winding. You also want many more winds around the post with the plain strings. To gauge winding, hold the string taut from the post to the 12th fret, and give yourself slack equal to the height of your middle finger pressed straight onto the fingerboard. Once you have all the strings on, stretch the hell out of them a few times. That will keep the strings more in tune, as they have to stretch anyway. You can buy a passable tuner for $20-$30 at most music stores. I do hope that helps.

Sounds like you only have a problem with knowing how much slack to leave.

Pull the string through the hole until taut, then push 3/4" to 1" back through the hole to give a little slack, kink the string and wind it up.

Make sure to put a little tension on the string with your thumb as you wind so it wraps firmly around the post.

When they're all on, tune it up (buy an electric tuner), stretch the hell out of the strings by bending them, then tune it up again. Play for a bit until it goes out of tune again, then tune it up again and you should be good to go.

WONDERFUL. That's EXACTLY how I needed it to be said.

Cheers to all who replied =)
