So I'm lookin to buy my roomate some guitar strings (and maybe a glass slide) for Christmas. Does brand really matter? The only brands I know of are D'Addario and Ernie ball. All advice is appreciated

Ah yes, I figured I forgot some details. He plays both a telecaster and jazzmaster electric. Does music style/sound come into factor also? I'd post his bands myspace but I dont want people to think I'm spamming or anything.

Get him some Ernie Balls. Might as well ask him what gauge he prefers, cos otherwise if you get the wrong kind it will be a wasted effort on your part. Playing with strings you don't like sucks ass.
If he plays acoustic I'd suggest Elixirs, they're expensive but so worth it.

awesome right on man. I have an old pack of strings he's using. I would never have thought of the gauge. So they're regular light gauge .010 - 0.046. Should I stick with the D'Adddario brand he uses now or splurge on another? The reason I ask is I dunno if they are like average economy brand and he buys em cuz the price is right or what.

I use Di'Addario for my elec and ernie ball earthwound for my acoustic. I like the Elixer strings alot as well, because my hands sweat like a fountain.

They're a standard, as are Ernie Balls really. I'd suggest doing some price comparisons at the nearest music supply store. Maybe talk to the douchebag behind the counter who will try to sell you the most expensive shit and a dozen other things as well. I use Slinkies on my electric and never had a problem with them.. Elixirs for my acoustic cos they're just too expensive for my electric, I break those strings much more often.

I play w/ DR strings. I was over a friends house one day, tried out his bass and fell in love w/ DR strings. the look, the feel, the sound I don't know if their guitar strings compare but I can't imagine the quality would be anything less.

Elixir is truly where it is at if you want quality strings. They are pretty expensive though.
Especially for acoustic guitars imo.
