Incubation dispute.
    #657457 - 06/01/02 12:09 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Most people I had seen seemed to basically agree that roughly 85 degrees is the best temperature for incubation.

Fanaticus says that jars can sit at even 70 degrees and do fine.

What's the deal here? Has anyone *personally* compared the temp. differences with PF jars?

The tempature increase will generally help your jars colonize a bit faster. Although, they will colonize at both tempatures just fine.

Using an incubator will make your jars get finished colonizing a few days sooner. If you dont want to make an incubator or you need to keep your stuff secret then just leave them in the box and keep them in a dark place. Usually takes 2-3 weeks for them to completely colonize.

How much is a "bit" faster? I don't mean to be picky.

It's just that, if the difference between 75 and 85 degrees is *a FEW days*, then I would prefer to NOT deal with making an incubation chamber. It'd take less space and cash.

But, if the difference is a *week* or two, then I may still want to incubate them at 85 degrees...

If you want speed then incubate. If you're not in a big hurry then save the space and the cash. Most strains will colonize a 1/2 pint pf style jar in 2-3 weeks with or without an incubator.
